Summer holiday in Los Angeles

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

i'm planning my holidays in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego this summer, the second and third week of august (tipical for an italian...). I will rent a car in la so it won't be a problem moving around.

i've already planned to visit universal studios, Beverly hills and the wax museum, the LA museum of science, Sea World in san diego, a stop in barstow and calico ghost town going to las vegas and, obviously, hawk hockey and giant stores...

but i was wondering, there's something else typical that i left out??

and, more, i need some good advice for a few malls where go on shopping for shoes (especially easton's baseball ones), pants, shirts and tees.

any suggestion will be be really appreciated!!!

thanks in advance.

the getty museum near LA is pretty cool. You could always try to get tickets to a TV show, but I don't know what filming schedules are for the summer.

Make sure you stop to have an In-N-Out burger.

It's easily the most popular fast-food hamburger chain in SoCal. We keep crossing our fingers that they'll make it Denver some day.....

In-N-Out is good but the best stuff they make there isn't on the menu. They have like 30 other things that they make, but aren't on there and are amazing. Go to the Block in downtown LA, its a really big outdoor mall.

Hit me with some of those things.

In-N-Out tastes like glorified mcdonalds, in other words, glorified dogshit.

Try FatBurger then!

They're different types of burgers and price points.

In-N-Out isn't a large burger, but everything is fresh. I mean everything. Nothing gets frozen. They even have a kid getting tennis elbow because all day long he's pulling a lever on a french fry press. (I think that's the name. He puts the pototo in, pulls the lever, cut potatoes fall into the bucket.)

Again, In-N-Out's burger isn't large, so it only costs about $1.45 with tomotoes and lettuce and sauce. That place is incredibly popular. You generally have to stand nearby tables that look like someone's about to leave, because there usually is more than one person waiting for an empty table.

Jason, I know they are; I live here. My point was that you should try FatBurger instead, if you feel that way about a burger. Kind of the "you get what you pay for" thought. Islands is a nice second choice, if you want a "non-grill" atmosphere.

I think In-N-Out's prices have gone up a bit from the $1.45, but, they are still very reasonable for what you get. The negative of course, that you have to wait in the long drive-thru line. The flip side is to try and find some seating, which, the newer stores do have some adequate seating now.

delpiero27, as far as your visit out here to SoCal, you seem to be hitting a lot of good places. I'd check into tickets for Leno or Jimmy Kimmel. You might find tickets for Leno while at Universal Studios as you cruise through CityWalk.

As far as baseball shoes, Chick's has a good selection and Big5 always has some sort of closeout working. Just remember that the new baseball shoes don't ship to stores until late November.

Malls all depend on where you are staying and how much you want to spend. Orange County's three larger malls are all upscale, with South Coast Plaza being the pricest.

When you go to San Diego to see Sea World and possibly the Wild Aminal Park ;) , stop in Carlsbad at the outlets there. They are very clean and I have always found incredible deals there.

Thanks Marcelo!

i don't want to go on with the burgers fight :P , maybe i'll try both, just to say i've been there! I have only to consider that my wife loves mcdonald, and hates burgerking... but here in italy the taste is different. i've been in toronto many times, here on base, and in long beach long time ago, and i know what i'm talking about.

anyway, i know i'm ignorant, but haven't seen Jimmy Kimmel live... but i saw Jay Leno on AFN sometimes! maybe i'll try to see if i'd get the tickets..

i just have figure out how to find out some extra time, 'cause it will not be a rest holiday, but a big rush i think. well it worht the run in any case.

thanks for the advice for the malls, i'll try the cheapest. but a visit to the others is one of my interests, love the architecture of us ones. in europe we have to learn more about that forum you.

now i'll go anch check out the wild animal park, it sounds interesting! maybe i will found another one like me (my wife suggestion...)

finally, don't worry, i will pass by carlsbad, already planned to fill up the luggage with new hockey stuff!! consider that, based on the web prices, i will be able to change nearly all the equipment that i have for nearly a third of the price i would spend here in italy...

Okay, off the burger topic!

You'd take the 805 out of San Diego to Irvine. Generally, at that point, you'd then either take the 405 or the 5. The 5 goes through LA on an inland path, ultimately heading into the middle of the state, while the 405 heads more toward the ocean, although you can't see the ocean from 405.

Having said that, around Irvine you can take the 33 (I believe. It's been years) to Laguna Beach. I'm pretty sure you can pick up Pacific Coast Highway there. It's slower that way, but who cares when you're on vacation.

For an attraction besides burgers..... The Huntington Gallery/Museum (I can't remember which city) is an interesting place. It's sort of an American equivalent to the European castles, but I imagine on a smaller scale.

It has been awhile since you were here Jason!

From Sea World, it is a straight shot on the 5 North. If you are at the "Aminal Park", then you'll need to mix in the 15 and 78.

When you get on the 405, you can see the ocean from many parts of it. When you are sitting in traffic on it, all ya gotta do is look. The catch here is that it needs to be a clear day with not much smog or off-shore haze.

Anyways, if you have the time, and I mean a lot of it, as you come out of San Diego and up into South Orange County on the 5 North, jump onto Highway 1 which is PCH. Then take that north into Laguna, Newport and Huntington Biotch's. It is a very peaceful drive and many places to stop and grab a bite, including another burger joint called Ruby's, which is a 50's style diner.

Great suggestion on The Huntington. It is in San Marino (aka Pasadena). The LA Arboretum is also in that same neck of the woods. You could probably pull both of these places off in one day, if you really wanted to.

Unfortunately, I think Santa Anita Park is not running horse races during August or you might have yourself a nice hat trick for the day.

That's this morning's installment of Marcelo's Southern California Tour Guide. I'll be back later in the thread :D
