DangleDangleChamp 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 I was thinking about billeting next year for hockey. I was wondering if anyone else here billets or has billeted in the past. What is it like? What should you look for in a billet family?
sherwood21 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 I have lots of times. Most of the time you'll get killer billets, they won't apply if they are asses or won't look after you. Most of the time you should be playing puck/with other people, so the time you spend at home is limited. You should get one with another guy on the team if you can, that's always good. Really, you need to find a way to not get too bored without bothering the billets too much. You just have to get used to being away from home for a long time, that's the only hard part. You playing Junior?
DangleDangleChamp 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 No, I will be playing Midgets on the other side of the state.
Dman33 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 i billeted, and i loved it to be honest with you. I was lucky enough to have an awesome family. They pretty much let me do whatever i wanted, but i tired to be respectful and tell them what was going on. I got pretty close with them, and would hang out with the kids whenever i wasn't with the team. It could really be a positive experience, if you get the right family, i still keep in contanct with my billets, and plan on visiting them sometime this summer

J-Shera 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 A billet is a family that you live with when your playing away from home, My family was a billet for Barret Jackman and Derrick Moris back in the day,
sherwood21 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 It's a family who takes care of you and acts like your guardian as you are away from home playing hockey.Like if you are in Connecticut (right?) and you go to Ontario to play Junior A, you'd have a billet. sherwood21 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2005 Halifax: Team Ontario Challenge, was there for 3 weeks.California: California Wave summer team, was there for 3 weeks.Toronto: Was there for 6 months. For prep hockey/Peewee.Winnipeg: Some random Tourney for a week or so.Edmonton (while I was in Toronto): was here for 2 weeks for Team Brick thing.I could list things from summer hockey and stuff, like coming up from Cali/Going to Cali/Going to NY, etc. Buuut, that would be pointless because i only stayed with those people for like 5 days at most. troybruins89 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 How do you find a billet family if your looking at playing away from home?
Dangles 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 I've only billeted once and it was for four days while at Winter Games for hockey. I had some old guy who had to work and told us to phone him whenever we needed a ride anywhere. He lived downtown and everything was in walking distance so whenever we wern't playing hockey we just hit up the mall or something like that.
hockechamp14 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 Why do you guys billet for such short periods of time? Isn't it a more teambuilding thing if you all stay in a hotel or something for the 3-8 days?
whbd18 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 ah i get it now
sherwood21 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 Why do you guys billet for such short periods of time? Isn't it a more teambuilding thing if you all stay in a hotel or something for the 3-8 days? Every example I gave (except for the 6 month) was a case of me leaving to play for a team I had never played with before. I might have stayed with 2 or 3 other guys, but the teams weren't actual teams, they were made from all over Canada.
whbd18 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 the farest i ever went for hockey was about 5 hours away from me in upstate new york, i dont think ill ever need a billet family ,i was gonna go to a week long camp in toronto but it was too expensive,i was going to play for the new jersey rockets but then how was i going to get there and plus how does it feel living with strangers
Dman33 0 Report post Posted June 12, 2005 its really not that bad to live with strangers you just have to have an open mind, and remember that they're gonna just as nervous, if not more, than you are. The first couple of days may be weird, but after a while you'll be fine and you really won't think twice about it
