new rules

most icing race related injuries I have seen/experienced come from two guys going full speed crashing into the boards together. Race to the red line would eliminate that.

They are, but they aren't generally from hits. They are bumping before the boards where a player falls and slides into the boards. that 3 feet (or so) that they are saving won't do a thing.

Maybe eliminate is not the right word. How about decrease?

The "wrestling" during the race should in theory be reduced because of the proposed improved enforcement of interference.

After a little reflection, I don't think this is a good change. Why? because any time a race takes place where the racers are in close range of each other, regardless of the rule, it will be a race to the puck. Think about it.

What is the point of racing the defender to keep the puck in play if you aren't going to control the puck? There is no point in winning the race if the puck is 50 feet from you. The defender will go for the puck in case he loses and the attacker will go for the puck in case he wins. You still have two high speed objects converging on the same point.

This rule accomplishes nothing.

With that being said, the no change after an icing is starting to grow on me.

I think there are instances when this rule could be positive, although I'm speaking from rec hockey experience.

Let's say we're breaking out of the zone and there's a seam between their defensemen that I skate towards to get a pass. Possibly I slip behind them, but my teammates pass is behind me and I can't touch it. If it could, it would be great, because I'd have a breakaway; however, since we missed, it goes down to the other end for icing.

With the rule change, and my momentum, I'd have the best chance of getting that puck first at the other end. The goalie, of course, could play the puck but it's possible I force him into a bad pass, or maybe I steal it from him.

Now, however, the whistle is blown and any effort I exerted to beat the puck to the goal line is nullified.

Touch up is going to happen and most likely permitting two line passes will as well. Smaller goalie gear and yet another crackdown on interference as well.

Honestly, I would prefer to see fewer games reach OT let alone a shootout. As long as there is some emphasis on teams trying to score more goals, I'll be happy.
