NHL still in Trouble

Recommended Posts

Just to show how much work the NHL still needs to due South of the 49th...

On teh day that the NHL announces that it is back in business

Sportsillustrated.com has Ricky Williams on the front page...

ESPN has the LA Dodgers.

Sad!

Because yesterday and today were rubber stamp exercises. The real day was when they announced the deal in principle.

...Agreed, but still. You shouldn't have to go looking for a sports story this big on either of those pages, it should be front page....Big Headline.

I guess it's just further proof that the majority of the United States sports fan demographic cares very little for hockey, the two articles just seem to serve as more evidence to this fact.

When are you people going to quit whining about hockey not being a true mainstream sport in the states. In most hockey cities its loved but it just doesn't have the numbers.

Well, when your a 30 team league and 24 of your teams are in the states the fact that it isn't more mainstream is a probelm.

btw, are whining an lamenting the same thing?

Not really, this new CBA should cure most of that problem. It will make the game better received in its cities and that is enough.

Hell if I lived in half the NHL cities I wouldn't go to games either and I consider myself a pretty bug hockey fan cause most teams blow. Once the NHL is more competitive and small markets start winning fans will come. If I lived in say Florida Panthers area the only games Id go to were the ones against the top teams but that shouldn't be much of a problem any more because a lot of UFA will be moving and it will get more competitive. After this season the NHL should be getting more of the coverage it deserves but you have to understand that in the States it will never be as big as the other big three, NFL, NBA and MLB, thats just the brutal truth. Hopefully it will overcome Arena Football though, thats like the roller hockey of ice hockey and yet it is outselling the NHL.

It doesn't really matter now as the league's economic structure will make it self-sufficient, regardless of the size of the fan base.
