Brian's "Beast 2" pads....

Recommended Posts

Whatever works, whatever you're comfortable in...I'm not convinced that there is any one company that does every piece better than any other company or any one product line better than any other line.... Which is why so many goalies mix 'n match. You know you player types do the same thing. :D

For example: I wear Vaughn Velocity pads and trapper with a Louisville Exceed blocker. Why?, I don't like the palm on the Vaughn blockers...

RE: Noronens Pads... The Brian's DX2 pads are designed for modern butterfly goalies, Beast (Beast 2) pads are designed for more traditional hybrid goalies. Deeper leg channel, dual boot straps, completely different profile. Look at Noronen in the pic. Paddle down style of play...he's in the right pads.

RE: Noronens Gloves... The DX2 gloves feature a "funnel" thumb. It's an open gently sloped thumb which guides stray pucks towards the pocket. Beast gloves have an angled blocker thumb. The top portion of the thumb remains inline with the wrist blocker then turns sharply towards the pocket creating a larger blocking surface. Personally I prefer funnel thumbs, because I'm not an accurate catcher other examples: Vaughn Velocity, Mission Motion. Most pro goalies seem to prefer the blocker thumbs, Koho, RBK, Vaughn Legacy etc.... Can't even imagine why. At any rate Noronen likely prefers to just keep that snagg open and up in the air letting anything that hits it migrate directly to the pocket while he's down taking away the bottom of the net. As for the blocker, The DX2 has a greater taper at the toe than the Beast, better for paddle down play. Based on those factors...I'd say he's in the right gloves as well.

Same sort of thing with the "Bulin Wall". Traditional pads/hybrid style of play but the newer style vapor gloves work well for paddle down.

Just my opinion though. I don't actually know either of them so I couldn't say for sure... ;)

i duno i had koho, sherwoods and tps pads and i ahve brians pads and they are my fav and the dx2s are more towards a butterfly/hybrid type like me.i mean there is not one pad made for a sertin type of style of play they just are geared more towards a sertin type.the brians dx2 glove closes perfectly.the dx2 blocker is a but heavier.im most likly goign to order a vapr 2 blocker.

but i want to see more pix of these new beast pads

i found my next pair of pads!!! The rep brought a pad into the shop the other day...the bastard only brought one because he knew if he had both he wouldn't have been leaving with them LOL. Probably for next season, I'm going to get my helmet painted like Steve Shields Gary Cheevers mask, and then get my gloves and pads in natural leather color. It should be sweet. Definately with the Beast 2 pads, a rbk blocker, and a DX2 glove or velo glove. Brians is coming back with a vengance!!!

Lol... Isn't it entirely possible that they just could be customized Brians? Last I checked Brians would make your goal pads to almost any thing. But that was when I had my old pair, I've moved on since then...

No they are indeed beast 2's. The rep brought them into my uncle's shop about a week ago. They are flat faced, but they have three knee rolls. The knee rolls are more flat like a velo knee roll. Very nice looking pad. I like it a lot. I will probably have mine be the first set we get in. I didn't get to see the gloves. On a funny note...the rep only brought one pad because my uncle is notorious for not letting reps leave with any of the equipment they bring. He was pissed that they bring him the set...they should have because they have made him the only pro shop in the state of Maine that can order factory direct with them now. pretty sweet deal.

Currently all the retail pads are still 12". The 11" pads all have to be hand cut (or at least had to until very recently) because the manufacturers don't (or didn't) have dies for cutting the materials yet.

Sherwood was really the only company ready for the 12" to 11" changeover because they had already been producing an 11" pad and marketing it as a womens model.

Actually I believe that is untrue...but some companies might have had that problem. All of the pad companies that offer intermediate pads are able to make the switch over really easily. I know for a fact that Brian's and Vaughn both allow us to order 11" wide pads on any order for no additional charge.
