Just throwing this out there-

Why is Roy considered such a better goaltender? Aside from the number of Cups won, their stats aren't much different. Roy played in about 150 more games, and has about 100 more wins, but he also played on much better teams which would also account for more Cups. GAA Belfour is better by .1, SA% Roy is better by only .03%. Roy has 66 SO, Belfour has 75. I really have no strong opinion either way. I'm a Belfour fan and I can't stand Roy, so I'm obviously biased towards Belfour. Still, from a pure numbers standpoint, they look pretty similar.

Good observations, but I think that it's:

a) the number of cup rings in Roy's ears...

and more importantly:

B) the sheer number of goalies from the generations following him that he influenced, especially in terms of style. I can't remember any time where someone said to me or I read about someone saying, "Ed Belfour was my hero and I modelled my goaltending style after him."

That said, I love Patrick Roy, but I don't mind Belfour at all...

The 2 Cups that Montreal won with Roy were won BECAUSE of Roy. In Colorado there was a great cast of stars...Montreal didn't have that.

4 Cups to Belfours 1...and 2 of those he won singlehandedly (Wasn't he Conn Smythe for 3 of them as well?). Remember the string of Jennings trophies he won with (whoever his backups were at the time) for best Team goal stats. And, yeah like you said...an entire province of goalies grew up playing his style in net.

Belfour's good...no question, but their are stats other than just the regular numbers to look at as well. Who would you rather have in the playoffs (regardless of his regular season stats) - St. Patrick or the Eagle?

Exactly. I think Roy won cups singlehandedly for his teams. I know I will take alot of flack for this, but I'd put the '93 cup team among the worse teams I've ever seen win the cup. All the favourites were out early. Toronto took down Detroit, STL knocked out Chicago. Pittsburg was gone, Quebec was gone thanks for the Habs. Roy still played amazing in those years. His status really dropped in my mind as he was responsible for them losing games on bad goals. It happens to all goalies, but it started happening to him regularly in the playoffs. It looks like this is also creeping up in Belfour too. Alot of people don't account for his weak last few years because his stats were still good, but overall, I think he still needs to be considered a better goalie.

I look at Belfour this year, he looks so small, I can't believe he can even stop a puck. He is rarely square to the shooter and mostly out of position. I think Belfour will kill the leafs the more the season will advance. At least, for now, he's doing the job but I don't know how.

Anyway, Roy won 2 cups for MTL all by himself, one at his rookie year and one in 93 that no one(even in QC) thought the team would win it.

Belfours been very average this season and has hurt the team as much as he has helped them. He played a good period against Boston, a good period against Montreal and had his first good 60 minute effort of the season last night. Being square to the shooter and position has always been Belfours best asset. I think the angles on TV are a bit decieving, but he does look much smaller and goals are going through him alot this season.

Good analyze, The Ribeiro's goal was awful, he should have stop it.

From the highlights I saw Belfour looked pretty solid against the Panthers last night. I think he made around 35 saves but his consistency has been an issue this year.

It was his best game all year, by far.
