Bad Coaching...

Recommended Posts

My brothers hockey team, my old(grad) has probably one of the highest potentials in souther ohio high school hockey, but, HORRIBLE coaching pulls them down. I coached D for about 2 weeks and left b/c 1.) Couldnt stand the other coaching decisions 2.) They wouldnt let me make my own 3.) They also asked me to leave b/c i sat a Defensemen who is completely horrible and wouldnt quit using his feet instead of his stick and whiffting causing 3-1's. These coaches also have never played and don't know one damn thing about hockey. We have 1 kid who has played AAA, 2 kids that have played AA hockey, 7 players who have played AA, and the rest, about 5, are B-A players. Our goalie is also a former A player. We have finished in the bottom half(04-7th place; 05-6th) out of 8 teams in the league the past 2 years with each year having teams well worth 3-4 spot and this year the 1-2-3 spot(league is well rounded this year too). My dad, who has coached this kids till high school, about 3/4 of them, taken them to 1st place wins on many travel teams, is well qualified for a coaching spot and they have never asked him even when he trys to help, they turn him down. He played at Rocky River highschool when he was a kid and this was when they were goodb :P (i believe they won their league 3 years in a row and went to state once, i think it was '77,'78, and '79 then went on to play for OSU. The parents all agree he should coach so what should they all do now? Petition? Its getting quite ridiculous and thought id ask the rest of you hockey fiends for advice. Sorry for the long post... ;)

And that's why I will not coach youth hockey again unless I have the authority to do whatever I want.

High school coaches that have never played themselves?

That's sick of them and I think irresponsible to the kids if they are offered experianced help. Parents should pettition I think.

I've only played inline and adult league hockey, never in college or high school and I sometimes feel underqualified and I'm working with 4-8 year olds. We have about 6 parents with all kinds of real world playing experiance but no coaching. Darn right, I solicite thier help in running drills and such. A good coach is like a good manager, they have to use resources. Sounds like they are not using thier resources correctly and it shows.

You don't have to be a good player to be a good coach. A good coach is a student of the game, however you have to know your limits and use resources. They sound like they are not.

whats your old man's name. a bunch of my dads buddies played at OSU in the 70's, but they may have been done by 76

but, in all honesty... welcome to the politics of hockey. it sucks, but unfortunately, its the real situation! I got turned down for a Peewee A team for a guy that has a kid in the program. he has never coached travel... not to brag, but ive got 2 national championships as a travel coach. but i don't go to the same church as the rest of the association, so apparently, im not as qualified!

go figure. but, the way it worked out in the long run, i am much happier where i am at!
