Sounds like the blaster Virus. http://www.pandasecurity.com They are a good antivirus site. Run the software. To have enough time to do whatever you must... when the dialog box comes up that says computer is about to shut down, follow these steps: go to Run, then type cmd. When the command prompt comes up, type shutdown -a This will cease the shutdown process. And step 3 is to get a mac, they are viri free (in theory)

is the fan on your power supply still working? It sounds like an overheating problem.

I doubt it. It wouldnt shut down in even intrivals, and it would most likely have crashed by now, or would not power on.

That has happened to a couple of my computers. It takes the same amount of time heat up and shut down. The smell of burning electronics is a tip off on that though.

As for Anti-Virus, AVG is the best program I've seen for a home computer and it's free.

AVG is good, but Panda has a free product somehwere burried on their website that is even better than AVG. The fine folks at Panda usualy catch the viruses first. They have technologies that if any odd ports are being used or any weird scripts are running, they will be automatically notified (with your concent) and they can go from there

ive had that problem before and I needed a better Power Supply. I went out and got a new one and that problem hasn't occured since. Maybe buy an air blower and blast all the dust out from your powersupply, cpu fan & heatsink, and your computer in general.

well ,i tried a different power supply ,and i think the longer its off the longer i can go on without it shutting down and when i start it up i have to unplug it for a second ,plug it back in and then start it up ,theres no smell of anything burning either

You removed the power supply box from inside the computer? Or did you just try a new power strip?

I've seen this happen with a dead CPU fan. The CPU overheats and the OS locks up. Often, XP is configured to reboot the system when this happens.

Do you know much about computers? Open up the case & turn the computer on. Look & listen for the CPU fan (small fan on a big piece of metal on the motehrboard.) and also check the power supply fan (big metal box on the back of the computer).

Both of these are fairly cheap fixes (between $10-$50) but swapping the CPU fan can be difficult if you've never done it before. If you don't have a friend that has built computers, PM me. I can point you to a few sites and give you some advice on it.

My guess is it's your CPU fan. The fact that it stays on longer when you let it sit for a few minutes supports that as the CPU has time to cool off.

AVG = Meh... Avast is loads better imo, free, and catches a lot of stuff AVG misses. And isn't annoying as heck to get working right.
