Got new skates... what should I expect?

Recommended Posts

My equipment manager friend just sent me some Vector Pro's.... I've been skating in my good old pro stock Vapor 10's now for the last year and half (Ken Daneyko's skates from Goalie Heaven) so I'm kinda wondering what will happen when I lace em up and head out to the rink tonight. Other than falling on my ass what can I expect? Will they be hard to get used to? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance again....

When I went from Bauer skates to CCM's I noticed that I had trouble turning tightly at first due to the longer radius on the CCM's giving more steel on the ice, but I found that by leaning forward a little it got me on to a more rounded part of the blade up front, allowing me to turn just as well but still getting the extra glide and stability of the flatter steel further back.

Thanks... I knew that the turning might be an issue given the longer radius but these skates are so ridiculously lighter than the bauer's I'm going to give them a shot. Daneyko retired in 2003 so maybe it's time I retired the skates...

Are you guys saying that you can get used to the ccm blade coming from bauer. I have skated bauer my hole life but years ago I purchased ccm but then returned them because of the blade issue. I have wide feet and ccm skates still fit me better than my 8090"s.

Funny, the NEW bauer skates claim a longer steel for more speed. Isn't that what CCM skates have had all along. :)

Don't forget folks, if you have bauers and want more speed, a simple radius job can do that for you, if you have CCM's and want more turning ability a simple radius job can do that for you. I laugh at folks who get rid of skates, when for less than $20 they can have them re-profiled to get whatever performance they want.

It should be the idiots at the LHS that should tell you that!!! I just learned about profile from JR. nobody at perani's ever told me about getting them profiled! they just took the skates back! Not my fault. But now I know! And another thing if you need the facts just go to JR. I have learned alot just by stopping in at his store and talking for 20mins. he widened my 8090's for me and now they fit good.

EDIT: I'd be careful who you trust to do the profiling for you though, some shop guys are idiots.

I thought CCM had 271 and Bauer 272. Don't the rest of the blade sizes match up?

Yes you can adjust from stock standard Bauers to stock standard CCMs. If you're going that route, I'd say try the new steel and see if you like it for a while, if that doesn't work out for you, then go get them profiled. One thing to remember when getting your skates profiled though - often your old skates profile will be completely different from when you bought the skates depending on how they were sharpened over the course of their life!
