That 80s Show

Recommended Posts

As Yogi says, "Its deju vu all over again." After watching Flames, Oilers, and Nucks go end-to-end all week long shooting and hitting nothing but net its time to say this is the NHL as it was in the 80s. The rules have stretched out the rink and opened up opportunities to score at both ends of the ice. This is the run and gun hockey that was characteristic of the wide open west in the 80s. Now for those of you who don't like the style of play, the tempo, crazy chances in the attack zone, I can only say you probably would not have enjoyed watching these great players: Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Coffey, Anderson, Hawerchuk, Paul Maclean(Winnipeg Jet wing who Bert is kind of a clone of), Denis Savard, Steve Yzerman(as a youngster), Ron Francis, Bernie Nicholls, Mike Bossy, Doug Gilmour, Michel Goulet, Peter Stastny, Cam Neely, Pat LaFontaine, and Steve Larmer. These guys would be lighting the lamp night after night in some wild high scoring games. Even back then the "purists" would moan at the lack of defence but damn, it made for exciting and entertaining games. The speed and scoring as seen again this week, and the Sens have been an 80s Oiler flashback all season long, is just fun to watch. It may not be pretty at times but watching "That 80s Show" all over again has been something that keeps you in the game deep into the 3rd period, no matter who is playing and no matter what the score. I say "Bring it on!"

I agree. This is the kind of hockey that will keep the average and new fan interested. Of course, some of the purists may say it's schlockey hockey. I say, we are there to be entertained, and this entertaining.

And there are still the low scoring, very defensive games out there. I was at Devils-Thrashers game last night...1-0....1-0!!! I couldn't beleive it.

But at least the new rules and new styles allows for the game to be opened up, and the possiblity of run-and-gun is out there. A few years ago, if the Devils went up 1-0, it would usually finish that way. But now you can see, alot of games are going back-and-forth, with lots of goals a la Vancouver-Edmonton, Vancouver-Calgary.

Maybe it's just Vancouver...who knows. But it is fun to watch.

Peter, I highly suspect the purists who moaned during the 80's also moaned during the 90's.

Reminds me of the great title to Modest Mouse's last album: Good News For People Who Like Bad News

You sure Mogilny?

I thought he was a rookie around 92'

Just checked hockeydb. 89-90 was his rookie year- 65 games, 15 goals, 28 assists, 43 points. 92-93 was breakout year: 76 goals, 51 assists, 127 points.

Ponty,

great job with spelling those Finn defencemen! Olli-Matti Matihalti would be very proud of you. Those 2 guys could go end-to-end and bring some mustard from the point on the power play. Rexy was great to watch in his Ranger years.

Jason,

The purists always complain! Lets go back to the Original Six, teams riding on trains, and CCM Tackaberry skates.

FYI,

Calgary and Vancouver get to knock each others lights out again on Monday night.

Probably because most of us are essentially resistent to change. Initially, many of us don't like the change to a band's sound......"I liked Sgt. Pepper's better." Over time, the newer sound will grow on us.

Ironically, however, bands need to evolve to survive. Otherwise, people will say things like, "Geez, Boston 2 sounds exactly like Boston 1" Of course, when you sell seven or eight million albums, you probably don't care if people are complaining..... :D

I never thought this thread would end up here! Once Garcia died, and he had been stoned dead for about 7 years, well that was it for me.............

Dark Star crashes

pouring its light

into ashes

Reason tatters

the forces tear loose

from the axis

Searchlight casting

for faults

in the clouds of delusion

Peter, did you migrate into a Phish Head?

My neighbor was a Dead Head (150+ shows) who once told me it was almost adulterous to say this, but he began to like Phish better.

I've found I like jam style bands, but more of the rock mode, such as the Allman Brothers. I've liked many of the Dead and Phish he's played for me, but then there's a lot that just gets too spacey for me.

"My name is Peter and I am a Dead Head." Yes, I've been on the bus since 9/28/72(first show). However, I never could pick up the vibe for Phish. I have heard some stuff but I was just too far Dead. I also like the Allmans. My other favorite is Steve Winwood and Traffic. I like alot of todays music too but the f'n dj's never say the name of the band after they play a song I like! That drives me nuts.

In high school, I'd sleep with the radio on. This incredible, blistering song woke me up in the middle of the night; it was the first time I heard it and I was mesmerized. I had a big test the next morning, but I kept myself awake until the set was over at 3:20 AM for the DJ to announce it was the Outlaws with "Green Grass And High Tides."

I guarantee I wouldn't take that chance today. :D
