beaucoup_fish 0 Report post Posted January 12, 2006 Story here.Directly from the article: He also ripped on Barry Bonds and the home run hitters of the steroids era."Hitting in a game is no different than hitting in a home run contest," Gossage said. "It [ticks] me off to say Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter. He's playing in a wussy era. The game is soft. You never get thrown at today. Last thing a hitter has to worry about today is getting hit. The first thing Hank Aaron had to worry about is: Am I going to survive this at-bat because I'm black." --> I have to agree with Goose, Barry Bonds is NOT the greatest hitter ever. Albert Pujols is. :P In all seriousness, I have to admit that I'm one of those people that believe Barry's record should have an asterisk next to it, because there's no way you go from hitting 49 homeruns to 73 then back down to 46, 45 and 45. How the hell do you explain that? Luck?! Give back 30 or so homeruns, and then we'll see.EDIT: Is it just me or does anyone else find it comical that only ballplayers use "vitamin" cream? Barry, Raffy, Giambi (not sure if he was cream, or just plain ol' needles in the butt)...c'mon...these guys are better than that. "Oh, I thought it was vitamin D." Why the hell do these guys need a cream supplement of vitamin D anyways?
JR Boucicaut 3804 Report post Posted January 12, 2006 Totally agree with Goose...most intimidating pitcher of his era...a time when your closer pitched 3 innings...

Jason Harris 31 Report post Posted January 12, 2006 They screwed over Jim Rice. I read recently that he lead the American League in something like 10 offensive categories over a 12-year period. If dominating your league over a 12-year period isn't HOF worthy, I don't know what is. Flo Hockey 7 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2006 Bert Blyleven and Jack Morris didn't make it either.Blyleven has a few records including host HR's given up in a season.Morris pitched one of the greatest World Series games ever when the Twins won in '87.It's a shame guys like these two aren't in the hall. It's a crime that Rose will never be in. 4,000 hits? He may have bet on baseball but he played damn hard.
#96 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2006 I heard Goose on a local show here in the NYC area (The Michael Kay Show) and he sounded so upset. I felt really bad. And I do agree. In his day, relievers went in for 3 or more innings and were expected to close the game. His numbers were good. Yet today, closers like Mo get era's of below 1.0 and they deemed as great, even though they may only pitch for 1 inning or less.
