He left because he felt micro-managed by Lucchino on all his moves, and he wasn't going to win any more autonomy in October. No one knows what the arrangement will be, but the presumption is he probably will end up with more say in baseball operations than he had before.

There's no doubt he didn't do as well in the '04 offseason. Most Sox fans can't understand why they went after Renteria at $10M per year, when Cabrera seemed good enough and would have cost about $6.5M.

However, you can't be serious that you think Epstein purposely took a three month sabbatical, then returned once he thought the coast was clear.

I'm talking more along the lines of signing as both teams don't have that great of a farm system. Not that Wonderboy did well with Renteria, but come on...Irabu, Contreras (even if he picked it up in Chicago finally), Wright, Kevin Brown...that's a lot of money for a lot of suck.

Irabu he didn't sign. Contreras was can't miss out of Cuba, hell the Sox wanted him worse than the Yankees did, George just decided to outbid them.

And, Cashman wanted Millwood instead of Wright. George's Tampa boys wanted Wright because of 97. That's why Cashman has control now.

Cashman also wanted Vlad instead of Sheffield.

And Kevin Brown coming meant dumping Jeff Weaver who pretty much lost the 03 world series by himself.

Actually, Duquette ruined the farm system because he constantly traded prospects for marginal middle relievers. However, the Sox' farm system is returning. I read over the winter that Baseball Weekly had it rated fifth best.

Believe me, just as GM's wanted Cano and Wang, they wanted Papelbon, Delcarmen and Hansen, as well as Hanley Ramirez who was traded.

Last, I remember the Sox bidding on Soriano when he came from Japan, but lost out to deeper pockets, so I'm confident that other teams knew about him.
