HockeyDude1712 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2006 I have this coach (not head coach) that is wanting us to do off ice training before practice. the things he does it stupid in my opinion. he makes us run for about 5 minutes and then we do push ups and sit ups forever. this coach is a doctor, but I think he is fu**ing crazy making us do push ups and sit ups which dont help much in hockey. who is crazy me or him? driz86 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2006 hes not too far off, as long as he doesnt kill you with the pushups. you'll want to do the endurance based slower training after the more intense strength stuff anyway. also, if not overdone it can train you to adapt in game situations where fatigue is a factor. i would only do that occasionally though. willy0314 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2006 the better your abs are, the better the hockey player you will be. sit ups and push ups are two of the best exercises you can do, because you can work almost your entire upper half of your body with them.exercises like sit ups are called "core exercises" because they work the core of your body. As the core of your body gets stronger, you will have better balance, skate faster and shoot harder. Push ups are also great because they work you chest shoulders and back, as well your arms.If you want to play better, and dont have time / desire to lift weights, you should be doing push ups sit ups and lunges or squats like its your job. sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2006 I think he's trying to get your muscles warmed up and the blood flowing. Ballistic (quick short) exercise as a warm up is what I was told to do by some power skating instructors. Before some of the travel games, I'll see kids out in the parking lot run around the parking lot a couple times then stop. Interestingly enough the figure skaters before practicing will be in the lobby jumping rope for a couple minutes. I like to relate things back to the caveman. They would probably speed up thier pace just before the hunt and the body would react to it by moving more blood around. Have you ever heard "I caught my second wind"? Here are a couple things I've been told after inquiring about pre game warm up:1) Deep stretching (stretch as far as you can and hold for 20 seconds) is bad before competition but good afterwards. Moderate stretching (partial strech and hold for 5-10 seconds) is better.2) BAllistic exercise (jumping jacks, jump rope) is best to get the heart rate going and the blood flowing to the muscles.I know in highschool when I wrestled, a quick 1-2 mile run in the morning when I woke up made me perform better in the afternoon games and practices. sonsplayhockey 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2006 Oh yea, better to warm up your body off the ice than on the ice wasting precious ice time.
ultraman7k 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 as longs as your coach doesn't make you run in your equpment...haha
biff44 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 who is crazy me or him? Are you saying you can not easily run for a mere 5 minutes? Situps--you should be able to do 100, and at least 50 pushups. I guess the answer to your question lies in what your goals are. If you want to dink around on the ice, have a good time, and win a couple games here and there against weaker teams, then he is a loonie. If you are serious about your hockey, are striving to get to the next level, and want to win every single game and get to the top of the league, and go far in post season play, then your attitude will doom you to utter failure! #28 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 The excercises that you guys are doing probably won't help your speed at all, but they will raise your endurance. Push-ups and sit-ups will increase core strength, which will help you with shooting and balance. Also, I'm sure you and your teamates could ask your coach to run some other excercises such as lunges, squat jumps, and plyos if you guys want to work on something that will help you with skating speed. hockeyfalcons456 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2006 Well on my team we have off-ice training after every practise, we do Plyo's,Sprints, and alot of different kinds of push-ups plus we do alot of core exercises,And pretty well everyone on our team weight trains ,so your coach isnt crazy he just wants his team to do well.If he was making you do pushups and stuff befor a game that would be kinda stupid, because you should go for a short run then do some dynamic stretching.
