Its only illegal if you get caught, plus their pretty hard to notice, especially if you paint them to match your skates.

Are the illegal in youth hockey?

Even if they were legal...why use them if you are only going to have to take them off at some point.

It would probably hurt your game to learn with them on, then have to lose them...you'd pick up bad habits and start relying on them, rather than good technique...but I'm not a goalie...just thinking (er, typing) out loud.

I'm not sure. Personally I have never had myself nor anyone I know get asked to see the bottom of their skates..ever. The only time the I can think of that you would have a good opportunity of having a ref notice them is while your down in the butterfly or something and the ref is along the goal-line...If they were painted to match you cowlings, they are almost impossible to see if your not directly looking for them and up close. This is just my opinion though.

I use them because I blew out both knees a couple years ago and they eliminate a lot of stress on my joints including my knees. If something allows me to play the sport that I love and live for, then you'd be damn straight to think I'm gona use it regardless of the rules. They have also saved my groin from potential slippouts while being in a hurry to get across the net too. Just looking out for my body

USA Hockey had them mentioned specifically at their clinics this year. Referees were instructed to look for them.

I know that you're supposed to look for them, but from my experience I have never had anyone directly check for them, nor have any of my buddies. I think its just one of those things where its just mainly timing adn the attitude of the refs.

Maybe I'll see you around the rink in districts.

Also Mike, my advice to you would to just hang low with them. If you keep the number of people who know you have them down to a minimum, then you will lower you chances of someone seeing them. IE--having your team and league name on a forum where potential refs and or opponents who would not want you to have them can find out that you indeed do have them, thus asking you to remove them. (Sorry Chad!!) This is one of the reasons why I am annonymous to everyone on here, save a couple buddies of mine. Just something to keep in mind.

Chadd what happens if you're caught using them? Do you get kicked from the game or is it like using an illegal stick where you get a penalty but can continue using them?

It's the same as an illegal stick, minor penalty and you can not continue play with the illegal equipment. In the case of OD blades you would have to leave the ice and remove them or use other skates. In the case of an illegal stick, you have to use a different stick. A second offense in the same game is another minor plus a 10 minute misconduct.

If a coach refused to pull his goalie with OD blades it would be a 2+10 every time the puck dropped until there was nobody left to skate and the game would be over at that point.
