Getting New Shinpads

Recommended Posts

My hockey experience is just about reaching the one year mark. Already I've had to replace my helmet, bag, and now my shinpads. Last night I went down in practice and now have a nice big crackin the outer shell of my shinpad along the knee, I think its time to replace it. They were Jofa 9070(?) and I'm now torn between seeing if I can find another pair on clearance somewhere or just upgrading to a pair of RBKs. I like bulky pads, because I equate bulky with protection. Theres just something fun about having someone come up to you after practice and apologize for that slapper in the shin and responding "you did?".

Does anyone wear any of the RBK's now? How do you like them, or not?

Can't speak for the RBK's, but I have Jofa 9040's and love them. If I were to have a problem with them, I would probally try to find another pair on clearance. Espically where RBK protective is basically Jofa restyled. If you were happy with the Jofa why not stick with them. You might be able to find a higher end model for the same price now by checking *cough*online*cough*.

I thought about that, but I've had some bad experiences with online purchases so I go out of my way to by local whenever possible. I'm thinking that the last time I was in my LHS they had some of the older Jofa stuff on clearance so I think I can do well.

Hey Adam- you're gonna need them by this weekend. I know your weakness now!!! I'd run over to The Hockey Shop in Lewisville. Haven't seen Mark over at Power Play in a while, but last time I was in Lewisville, I stopped by and was very impressed.

:P You wish. You guys are going down! We'll keep Joe in the box so long he'll need a change of address. :P Who knows I may even finally pop my cherry and score a few on ya!

This ought to be a great game.

Go Tundra Monkeys!

I'm gonna head to Power Play during Lunch today and see what they have on hand. I may have to stop by The Hockey Shop soon to get some new blades thought, because PP has been waiting for their shipment for a few weeks now.

Rabit Chase...

I've had my skates for a year now and am already having to get new blades because both ends are already ground down. Is that to be expected? There is plenty of steel in the center, but the ends are getting VERY close to the holder.

That's just a bad sharpener.

I use the 4Ks and I find them more than adequate. The little fit lite straps on the inside fell off after a few months but it's not a big deal. Also like the fact that they already have th elow cut pad above the knee. I'v taken shots off them and haven't felt anything. If you want more protection in a comparable pad get the 6Ks.

I've got the RBK 6Ks, and they're great for me. I like the bulkiness of them too. And they have a ridge on the kneecap area that helps you stay flat balanced when down on a knee.

The straps -- like someone else mentioned -- are moderate, if a little uncomfortable at times. Esp. the behind-the-knee one. But they're easily removed if you prefer taping. I do both (taping and straps). The removable calf protector is great, as I wear it during games, remove for practices.

I've taken quite a few shots and slashes and haven't felt a thing with them.

That's what I ended up getting. I asked if they had any left over Jofa stuff and he said what he didn't sell on clearance he sold on e-bay.
