Okay, need some skate ideas!

Recommended Posts

Well crap....i placed the order for a pair of 1300C skates this morning, and just got an email that they were sold out of my size. So i'm still looking for the right setup.

What would you guys suggest given the following:

I have a pair of Tour Beemers that i love, but am having probelms with my ankles, so was looking for something a little stiffer. I don't want to spend more than say $300 on the skates themselves, because i'll also be swapping out the chassis. No matter what i buy, i'm going to mount a Tour Humer chassis, so it doesn't matter if its ice or roller boots. What have you guys found that you really like for a relatively stiff boot - obviously the 1300C would have been very stiff.

My thoughts and i'd love your opinions on:

1) Mission 10000 and swap out the chassis - I could then sell the chassis and wheels to a fellow MSHer

2) Mission 9500 - same deal, swap out the chassi and go from there

3) Easton 1100 ice skate

4) Bauer 8090 maybe

Any other good suggestions for what i should look into. I'd like to find a deal today or tomorrow if possible.

Thanks

How about the Tour Code E-2, they are supposedly superior to the Beemer and almost on par with the Code-1, they will fit the way Tours fit, and come with a Cats Eye Hummer, all for 300

what sort of ankle problems are you having?

Well, basically, i think the skates are cut just a little bit too low, and put pressure on my leg bone, just above the actual ankle joint. I've developed small calcium deposits / boen spurs as a result, and the more i use these skates, the more those points on my leg hurt.

I think if i stopped skating, they'd go away, and therefore think that a boot that fits differently would help significantly. I think a stiffer boot would disperse the pressure more evenly along my ankle, and get rid of these sort of hotspots that i have now.

Seems to me the new Tour boots are cut pretty much idenitcally to the beemer. But i could be wrong.

I honestly don't know of too many other skates out there cut higher than the Tours. I got Beemers because my PF10's were a bit low and sliced up the side of my leg right above the ankle knob because part of the underlying materials were poking through. Maybe Tacks ice boots then, but that's really the only thing I can think of. The Code-1 is definitely a stiffer boot, so if a shop has a Code E-2 I'd say try them on first.

My advice......buy the E2's rather than using the old Humer Chassis. Here are my reasonings.....

1) I just got the E2's after trying both the Code 1's and Beemers on. The Code 1's felt world's lighter than the Beemers but were pretty darn stiff. So I knew I would like the E2's, but they are actually stiffer, or just as stiff as the Code 1's. For under $300, not a bad deal.

2) The new cat eye chassis is much much lighter than the original Humer Chassis. This is a tremendous part of Tour losing some of the weight on their skates this year.

3) If you buy new skates and remove the chassis and put the old Humer on, you void all manufacturer warranties. You don't want to do that before you even get on the rink.

My advice, get the E2's........well worth the $300 I spent on them and inlinewarehouse has free shipping on them. I have seen them on eBay too for 265 with free shipping too, just search code e2.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to everyone for their assistance. I'm going to see if i can find a pair of E2's to try on, maybe even just order some from inlinewarehouse. If they don't fit, i can send them back and just eat the shipping cost.

I also think i might spring for the 9500's so i may just order both, and see which fits better. Maybe I'll even like going back to a hi-lo setup.

Justin...what would you recommendation be if I wear a size 12 street shoe. Do i want a 12 or an 11.5 skate from you guys.

No worries, not screwing up my plans at all. I appreciate those sites, but even there, the skates are more than i wanted to spend. I had found them at Cyclone Taylor for 229, which was amazing, but they sold out of the 10.5. I just called hockeyguys and they could come down to $400, but not quite the same deal.

If it helps any, I wear a 8.5 in Tour and a 9 in Mission with a size 10 street shoe.

See, i keep getting differnet opinions on this:

i wear a 12 street shoe, and am in a 10 Tours, but they're probably a tiny bit small. So i shoudl be in a 10.5.

I get different answers on whether i should be in an 11 Mission or a 12.

I think using "street shoes" or sneakers as a point of reference is a terrible idea since just about every idiot out there wears shoes 3 sizes too big and that's not factoring in how different companies size compared to others.

Case in point, when I go to buy shoes, the gauge says my feet are 8.5 exactly but when I put shoes on 8.5's are too big. This unfortunately led through years of thinking I was a size 7 skate :(. Oh the dollars and tears that were shed.

I completely agree with Neo..the shoe size comparison is hardly accurate as people like different amounts of room in their shoes. I also spent years in skates that were larger than they should've been. If you know your correct size (toes feathering the end ect) then this can give you a better idea of what your size is in other brands. Of course your best bet is to always try them on if possible.

This is what I feel fits me:

7.5E RBK/CCM

8EE Bauer Vapor

8.5 KOR/Mission

I've heard Tours are sized similar to Bauers and that Eastons are about a half size up from Bauers, but I've never tried Tour or Easton so can't be sure. I've also heard that Tours are for wide flat feet and Missions are generally pretty narrow in D width. If you're a 10 in Tours then you're most likely a 10.5E or EE in the missions..if the Tours are too short than you might be an 11E or EE. Anything bigger than an 11 would likely be too loose. Now, don't take my word for it...based on the information you've provided and from trying skates on myself I'd say you're a 10.5EE or 11EE in Mission...I've only seen D sizes for 7500s and 9500s..if you want to get Missions you may have to go for either 5500s or 10000s as they both come in EE. That's assuming you have a wide foot...I only made that assumption because you were wearing Tours before and I heard those were for wide feet.

Thanks for the response. I don't wear the Tours because of particularly wide feet. Width has never been an issue for me, and i've never had problems with D skates or shoes.

Previously, i was in Nike skates in a 10.5D, and they felt great. Before that, i had Wicked Lights, and never had a problem with width, but i don't remember what size they were either....

I'll see about trying to fit them, but it may not be an option.
