A Few Questions

Hey, I was wondering what the differences were between junior and senior blades? are they the same curves or is one shorter than the other?

and also for skate sharpening what is the default sharpening? like if you dont specify how deep you want the hollow how will they sharpen it?

thanks for the help

as far as i know the default hollow is 1/2 inch.

some junior blades have different curves: like an yzerman jr. would be different from an yzerman. they usually also have lower lies. and the junior blades are smaller in size i think.

"Default" Hollow is different at every store, usually falls in around 7/16ths.

Difference in Junior curves varies between brands.

for all the sharpeners out there. is it a hassle for you guys when you're doing regular 3/8 sharpenings then one person comes in and asks for a different hollow? It's just that when I ask for a 5/8 i sometimes seem to get the regular 3/8 sharpening at my lhs which is annoying.

If you're busy it can be inconenient, but it's part of the job. I have asked people with special requests if I can clear out a couple other "standard" hollows before I do the special request if I was really busy. I used to have one customer who would give me one pair of skates that he wanted 3/8 on, then wait for me to be done before giving me another pair with 1/2, then giving me a third pair at 3/8 again. He wanted to make sure I dressed the wheel fully after every pair. Finally I told him if he kept doing that I was going to charge him extra as he was intentionally causing excess wear on the wheel and wasting my time.

Just curious, how long does it take to switch the machine between sizes?

depends on how far you're going, how sharp the diamond is, hardness of the wheel, if you really want it smooth, etc... Generally less than a minute.
