Boot/Sole separation - Is this ok on my skates?

Recommended Posts

I recently got a pair of Vapor XX's converted to roller. I've only skated on them a few times and already part of the outer sole near the toe area is becoming detached from the boot. I've attached a picture if it helps.

Is this ok? Should I fill it with something like crazy glue to try and keep it from seperating more? It's only on one skate on the outside of the boot. And it looks like the outer sole in that area is attached to the toe cap with just a little bit of glue. Maybe this is something I shouldn't be concerned about?

IMHO as long as the frame is solid on the boot you'll be ok. Looks like the plastic is trying to retun to its original shape and the glue there is a bit thin so its pulling away.

You can get some $2 epoxy-in-a-syringe from your local hardware store and fill it in if you want to be sure. That should also help prevent any further pulling.

The same thing has happened to all 3 pairs of ice skates that I've had converted to inline. I have tried the epoxy and I'm not sure if it helped much, but the skates never totally fell apart. You should be OK but it's always a safe bet to examine them periodically.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know the XX's are bad with durability... but I was hoping this wouldn't be the start of the problems after 2 times skating :)

I'll pick up some epoxy from my local hardware store just to fill that space and try to keep it from separating even more. I'm guessing the roller hockey chassis just put a little more stress on the outer sole and it's pulling just hard enough to separate the sole from the toe.

Thanks again.

Perhaps it's just me, but both of those skates look just fine. I had a pair of XX's that looked like those almost from the begining. Never got any worse and quite frankly they might have been that way out of the box.

You do not want to use epoxy, since epoxy will crack. Want some RTV based stuff that is partially flexible, like Shoe Goo, or Elmers makes a small tube of flexible RTV based stuff that dries tough as nails.

I had a problem with my skates doing that+ as a bricklayer I pick up some ressin+ used it on my skates they lasted a further year+ then the chassis snapped of I found no problem with using resin just dont pour to much of the stuff in

I've seen a lot of brand new Vapors with gaps around the toe cap and along the sides.

yah ive seen a few pairs like that myself, i do not know if its just me, but 3 guys on my current team are skating with Kor's and all of them have that problem, i fixed one pair of skates with Locktite Superbonder, and it worked fine, i just reguled them as soon as i noticed it was doing that again, but i my friend contacted bauer when his XX's did that and they said when they made the skate. something about the resin shrinking or something, same for the plastic tightning up, but take good care of yours skates even thow you alright might be doing that, but did you switch from hockey to roller?
