8090 buying, sizing & fitting

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for Bauer 8090 skates. I've wide, 45 european sized (11-11½ in US) feet in normal shoes (+low arch +flat foot profile). I also have a quite large bunion in my right foot next (similiar to this one in terms of size and angle: picture (warning :D). I have old (like 5-7 years) CCM 652 Super Tacks skates in size 10½ and they fit me well, but are all moldy and don't support a bit.

I've heard good things about 8090 and I guess they would fit me (at least 2EE+punching). They are now on end season closeout sale in my LHS (for 275$), but they only have few pairs of 8090's left and few are coming late this week. It seems these skates are running out in Finland according to my LHS.. not to mention that they are also discontinued. Only size they have coming near to my size ballpark is 11EE.

Other skate I've considered is CCM Vector Pro.

Some questions:

1) I'm afraid 11E will be either too big or small to me, what do you think? I've read other 8090 threads, but didn't really get an idea of their sizing. I know that they are sized differently than other Bauer skates.

2) What about the bunion problem (it sucks, I know)? Could I bake the skates and punch that area succesfully? In my current 652 Tacks that area is not a problem, but you can clearly see that area of skate bulging out. That is due boot is so soft and moldy. Any tips?

3) Buying tips inside Europe in case I can't get them from Finland. Also from US if I can't get them from Europe, but then I've to pay tax (VAT 22%) which sucks. However, if 11EE doesn't fit me, I can't be 100% sure about correct size for me so buying abroad would be a hassle (in case I need to return them). You can also recommend CCM Vector Pro's as they are my other option. I'm especially interested getting skates from Germany (I've already checked sellers at ebay.de).

Thanks already.

Another (online) hockey shop here has 9.0EE and 9.5EE in stock. The seller said in 9.5EE box there is a chart that states skates are 45 in european size. So it sounds good, but can anyone confirm accuracy of this chart?

I was able to purchase 8090s last weekend. I'm very happy with my purchase. The skates are beautifully made. I've been wearing Bauers in size 7.5. I've heard that these skates have a little more room, so I purchased size 7 D. I did try 7.5, but felt there was a bit more room. I wanted a tighter fit.

In shoe size, I wear about 9. I still have the box, and on it says, "Shoe Size- US 8.5, EUR. 42.0 and UK 7.5." I don't know if this helps. I hope that you'll be able to get a pair. I was thinking about Mission S500 for the supple fit, but with Bauers you really can't go wrong. :D

I'll try 11E at my LHS on Friday, but I guess they are too big. 9.5EE would be close to my size as mentioned earlier. Right now, I can order 9EE for 260$ (too small I guess) and 9.5EE for 360$.

Sven, I checked some sellers at eBay.de, and they didn't have 8090's on sale. But if you can find some store that has these at some decent price with return-option, let me know. Wouldn't want to pay 360$ for right size when I know I can get these for less.

What about that bunion problem (JR and other gurus)? Could I punch the boot succesfully for good fit even when it is a very hard boot (composite, I think)?

Thanks to everyone so far.

Well a return-option wont be a problem, but always keep in mind that YOU have to pay shipping then.

So just shoot me your size and ill try to get the best for you.

I wouldn't consider myself an expert, however, I just purchased 8090's a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the following info can help you:

Previous skates: 852 Tacks, size: 8D

New 8090's: size: 7.5D

I found the information on this site to be quite helpful when it came to ordering my skates. I knew Bauer skates were more narrow, however, these 8090's are cut wider and they are a deeper boot. Perfect for the CCM wearer who realizes their feet are too thick and their instep is too high for Tacks.

Good luck to you!

I know 8090's D width is wider than normal, I was just wondering if my bunion problem forces me to EE, probably so.

If your previous 652's were a wider width than perhaps you should consider the EE's in the 8090. However, having said that, you don't necessarily want all of the boot to be wide...just in the area of the bunion am I right? I am going to have to suggest foot surgery for the removal of that bunion. LOL. If you are living in Europe I know that your healthcare system functions far better than ours does. Ha! :D

Good luck.

My brother just got me 8090's. I had ccm 952 tacks from like 7 years ago in a size 9.5 D with.

I then got some left over Vapor 10's in size 9.5 EE and they had to be punched out.

I now need new skates and my size in the 8090's in a 9.5D I haven't used them yet because they feel a little too deep for my feet. But I would say the 8090 D with is a touch wider than the 9.5 Vapor EE with. I would be very careful before going with a EE with in the 8090s. I would say get the D with and punch them out over getting the entire skate a little too big.

I am thinking that the vapors after being punched out feel better on my heal than the 8090's do because my heal is very narrow. I am thinking about returning these skates before I bake them or use them. If anybody is intrested let me know.

Now I'm between size 9.5 and 10. I'm not sure about the width (D or EE?) yet, though. If you could help me out a little on this one too?

As said before, 8090's D width is wider than the normal D width. I wear 10.5E in 652 Super Tacks and it feels like there is a little too much room in them. The problem is, I can't try 8090's in my feet since my local shops doesn't have any near my size. I can order 9.5EE from few online stores here, but they don't have 9.5D. If D fits me better, then I would have to order them abroad.

Could someone fit me in D or EE remotely if I post my foot measurements and possibly some pics? I know fitting isn't accurate this way, but I don't really have many options here. At least it would give me some trend-setting info whether to get a D or EE pair. And again, I have that big bunion in my right forefoot which probably would fit OK in EE but would it fit OK in D with punching as well (now there's a question)? I'd like to have a snug fitting skate rather than having one which is too wide. Thanks.

Just ordered size 9.5EE from Finland (I get my money back if they don't fit). I will update about how they fit when I have them (probably tomorrow).

I just tried size 11EE in my local shop. They were too wide in midsection and I guess a tad too long. I'm quite sure that 10.5D is the correct size for me and I can get it pushed so it'll fit in my right foot as well.
