college hockey in socal?

Recommended Posts

i only started a couple years ago and i'm far from good - but i think i'm doing pretty well considering how long i've been playing. i play in the 'intermediate' league at my rink and feel like i fit in pretty well there - there's one higher level and two below. i'm pretty ambitious and i feel like i'm getting better all the time...

i think i'd like to play college hockey...though i know at my level it'd have to be club :]

i guess i'm just wondering if its worth trying to play someplace like CSULB (cal state long beach)? a guy i play against played there, and he's better than me...but doesn't blow me away IMO. i also have a buddy who plays for UCLA, who is very good, but he says they have two good lines, and two horrible lines.

it sounds like pretty much anybody can make a club team - it's just a matter of how much ice team one actually gets? is it worth paying $1300+ for probably minimal playing time? i think i'd be happy to just for the experience, and because i know it would make me better. i'd also like to be coached, as i missed out on that by starting at 19. i kind of regret not playing college soccer, but i was pretty burned out on it, and i'd much rather play hockey if I have the opportunity anyways.

has anybody here ever seen CSULB play? if so, what's the level like?

sorry for all the dumb questions B)

My wife went to CSULB, I didn't even realize they had a club team. USC, UCLA, Cal & Stanford all play in the Pac 8, which includes UW, Oregon and WSU. As CSULB isn't in the Pac 8, which is the only college level hockey travelling hockey that I know of in the west, I doubt they are fantastic. But who knows. Any full check hockey is good hockey, right?

If you can make it, I would suggest you do it. I played (briefly, and not very well) for WSU and I had a blast. Making the team my be more difficult however. Looking at their schedule they seem to have an OK team. Depth can vary quite a bit in the league though so I don't know.

UVA(uni of virginia) went out west and played some games this season. i think they played stanford, ucla, and a few other teams. UVA has a club hockey team.

When I went to school at CSULB, I caught a couple 49ers games. They are basically a club team. The players skill level varied. I remember CSULB had some great rivalry games against USC and CSUF (Cal State University, Fullerton). The 49ers kinda reminded me of the Bad News Bears of hockey. Their jerseys weren't as nice as USC's, etc.

I'm in the exact same situation as you, started last year at 19 and am in community college lookin' to transfer.

I'll be going to UC Davis which has a club team but they're not part of the NCAA or anything.

my friend played for UC Irvine for 4 years.. i used to have a guy on my adult league that played for UCLA but I think he was at the very most a 3rd liner.. our goalie was the goalie for CSUN, he was awesome.. there are some junior college club teams.. but they are north of you, Moorpark College has a team, and college of the canyons. I wish I had played college hockey,, if your not too old, I say you do it. I would go enroll in a few classes at Moorpark college just to have enough credits to play but I don' thave the time to handle any classes on top of work.

Hmm that would be a blast... where would you guys say would be the best place to actually getting a scholarship? I'm debt free and whatall, but playing hockey to pay for classes would be really cool. I'm thining the West Coast... I consider BC and California my two homes.

i don't know if any of the so cal colleges give scholarships for hockey. if any, maybe usc because they have so much money.

i played with some guys that played at uci. they're not too bad. they're a club team though. i'm sure you could make it if you are somewhat decent and try hard.

I've worked with their program for many years and he is far beyond "here are your jerseys and socks." He runs it like a true program. Everything is color coordinated from pants to gloves to helmets to bags, etc.

Shoot, we didn't even get socks.

No school with a club team at the ACHA DIV II or III level will give you a scholarship to play. I played at Univ of Arizona last season and its the only club team that doesn't require you to pay. My buddy plays for Weber State's D1 team and he gets 10k a year knocked off his tuition I believe to play for his school.

My brother played for 4 years for UCI as their goalie, from what I hear this past season they have, and the league has, gotten a bit more competitive since they moved from PCHA to ACHA. I played one game for them against Chapman like 2 years ago and it was a fricken joke. My guess is that these club teams have two good lines and two horrible lines.
