Improperly mounted skates?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - I went to go buy a visor today and came home with a pair of skates I don't need :]

I tried on Mission L7's and was impressed with the fit. I checked to see if the mounting looked good and noticed the right skate seemed off a little in the heel. I grabbed another pair and the holder seemed more centered to the outsole, but when wearing it, I felt like my ankle tended to roll to the outside a little bit. So, I ended up buying the pair that felt better, with the skate that looked slightly off. I figured it would be better to trust my feet and balance than my eyes.

I guess at this point I can return the skates (or swap the weird one) if there is an issue - But not after I sharpen them. I guess what I'm asking is - Is it possible that even if it's not mounted properly, it's better for my feet this way? Like how people have skates realigned for their feet? Or should I just go back and grab the one that looks pretty much dead on? Or is it possible that I could even be used to improper mounting if my Grafs are off? Could it just be that the unsharpened runners are so far from square that it was causing my ankle to roll a bit? If the steel is straight, is that a sign that it was mounted correctly?

Sorry for all the dumb questions. I just want to be sure they're perfect before I sharpen them beyond the point of no return :]

And I can get a pic up if that'll help...

Last thing - In the case that there is an issue, in the warranty card it says that Mission will warrantee skates with defects resulting from substandard workmanship - I'm assuming that this would fall into that category? I'm hoping they could take care of me directly if hockeygiant screws me or something.

Wow, you can really see the issue in the fourth pic. In the third it looks like the skate is warped, but that could just be an optical illusion. By warped I mean the flat part of the sole under the heel and the flat part under the forefoot should be parallel, and it doesn;t look like they are on that skate.

I can't really tell about the warped boot issue, but as far as the mounting goes, you're definitely right - i just measured and it's not centered :[

I guess my question is if should I take them back and look for another pair that's better, or if I should deal with Mission directly. For some reason, that skate seemed to feel better than the one that was centered...Like, I didn't have so much tendency to roll my ankle outward, if that makes sense.

I wish there were helpful LHS employees like you and JR around here!

its hard to say because the tendon piece has another piece sewn onto it and sometimes i find if the person doing the sewing isnt paying attention that can be on abit of an angle making it seem like the blades off, it does look off but nothing too serious though. I wouldnt really worry about it especially if that skate felt better because you may pronate yourself and the heel looks like its going to the inside which is where a blade would be mounted if you pronate
