Dangles

Edmonton Riots

Recommended Posts

What are you guys talking about? Riots have always happened, in Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary. They're crazy and honestly most of it is just good clean fun. Only a few ganstas and other stupid people give the whole thing a bad name.

I wonder how they will call these events. Probably something like the Oil Spill or something like that.

We get riots here in East Lansing every now and then when Michigan State advances late in the NCAA men's tourney. Students, although many were from the Community College, tore East Lansing apart. None of the riots have been good, clean fun: a mob of people, with members setting things on fire and trashing businesses.

I'd hate to see what they'd to to Edmonton if they won the Cup.

Well maybe Dangles shouldn't have called it a riot, cause there was no widespread destruction in Edmonton. Maybe that's why CBC called it a "melee" instead of a riot? I dunno

But about what I was saying, the "Red Mile," on 17th Ave in Calgary, whether you call it a riot or a melee (it has to be one or the other) is almost entirely "good clean fun." I've been there and it's all good. BTW I've never seen so many Calgary jerseys in my whole life. And even the Edmonton so-called "riots" of the other night... look at some of the charges. "assult" and "impared driving" lol sounds like the regular cleanup after a highschool game in a small town, not anything that a big city police department would lose any sleep over. I for one am not surprised that some hockey fans drank some beer.

It could be closer to the celebration in TO after the '04 World Cup final. My buddy and I walked out of the ACC and there was an absolute mob of people at Bay and Front streets, as people were jumping, yelling, singing "Oh Canada", hugging, whatever. A garbage truck was trying to get through the intersection, and kept blasting his horn, encouraging everyone around him. After about 10 minutes and with 10 people who had climbed up on top of the truck, it finally got past Front Street. Anyways, this was an example of a melee. Most people were civil, celebrating even with the police officers, and there was no need to disband the crowds. But there were a few arrests, as a bunch of fans surrounded a group of police and their horses and rowdly sang the "Ole!" chant at Front and Bay. The cops got pissed, and both sides went back and forth. We left the area before some guy got trampled by a horse, but that was the only problem area the whole night. However, when people get stabbed, it obviously elevates the need to break up the group.

a mob of people, with members setting things on fire

are you reffering to the couches at the apartment complex that it happens at every time?

I didn't want to turn this into an MSU riot thread, but you're right. I read that the number of fires set after MSU lost to UNC in '05 was only slightler higher than for a typical Saturday night in East Lansing. Kinda funny actually. In the end, most of the disturbance was a result of the riot police being trigger happy.

Riots after getting the series to 2-2 in the Conference semi finals... there must REALLY be nothing better to do in Edmunton. I mean sure, it was a good game, and sure, they won. But come on, at least make it deep into the conference finals before you start stabbing people!

Riots?!?!?

Puh-Lease...

I like how everyone jumps to conclusions about these things - the fact is there was a couple of incidents (albeit sever) that tarnished an otherwise civil celebration.

It seems that many of you forget that there are over a million people in the greater Edm area. The fact that a couple of boneheads (which I'm sure would be the case in most ANY major city) screwed it up for everyone else is no reason to pass judgement on the entire fan base.

I've been through all of the cup runs here and even back then there were idiots who took the opportunity to cause grief.

Cast your stones if you will - but the fans here are as civil as anywhere in the league - a few bad apples should not be what everyone judges them on.

With all due respect FireOnIce....

A few thousand fans out here hardly constitutes "Going Nuts"

I can only imagine what it would be like if the Oilers manage to win this series - let alone be competitive in the next.

The fanbase here has changed quite dramatically since the late 80's, early 90's and lets face it - they haven't had a whole lot to celebrate.

What also plays into this is the unreal rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton - and we all remember the Red Mile - and they didn't wait until the finals to get going there either...

Understand - I am not one of those who partakes in any celebrations yet - but I was around for the Glory Years - and I know they haven't won anything yet. Todays younger fans don't have those memories to curb their enthusiasm.

doesnt most of the chaos happen at Cedar Village?

That's where one of the basketball riots started, but it's really all over the Grand River Avenue area neighborhoods and the apartment complexes.
