Since it is going to be your first car, you are better off getting something that isn't very powerful. Just get something that is comfortable and can get you from point A to point B. I prefer domestic cars because they are affordable, ussually easy to fix, and they are reliable. Also, right now, a decent domestic car can be bought pretty cheap because they don't hold there resale value as well as an import car. Take a look at a 2001-2004 Ford Taurus. I have been driving an 03 for two years now and I really like it. It may not have flashy interior or the most powerful engine, but it is really comfortable. It gets decent gas mileage (20-23 mpg city), and has been reliable so far.

Also, remeber almost any car can be reliable as long as you take care of it. That means, make sure the fluids are always at correct levels, change oil every 3 to 4 thousand miles, replace the air filter often, etc.

Just a little aside... I love how mazda says rotary is the engine of the future :). Sure you can make 300 hp out of a N/A 1.5L engine... but what is that at 9 million RPMS? Damn Mazda. How bout some low end tourque?

well the rotory engine is a great design, it gives you good power with a LOT less parts.

it gives you power up top, but not power down low... that dumb things gotta spina nd spin and spin, okay now we can go, ok. Interesting engine, but I like having 400hp under 10k rpms
