I have a hernia.

Recommended Posts

I suspected that's what it was and the doc confirmed it today. I'll go in for surgery July 21 and be restricted from any skating or conditioning for 5 or 6 weeks.

I'll be back in time for next season but all the work I put in at the gym and all the work I had planned to do during the off-season is pretty much out the window. I can still do some upper body stuff but had planned to really hammer the legs and core in the gym and do some power skating classes this summer.

Oh well.

Is there any difference between a regular hernia (I had one when I was very young) and what they are now calling a "Sports Hernia"?

Yep, sports hernia specific to the inguinal line, (the ab muscle line running down your hip to your junk)

I think you will be fine. I had a kidney out 6 weeks ago and am now fully recovered to the point of heavy training and roller hockey with zero discomfort or problem. With this area of the body its difficult seeing as that everything involves a twist of the torso/core. Just do all you can to be lazy for 3 weeks.

I started gettin antsy around day 10, doing more than I should have around the house. But regardless, surgery today is absolutely amazing. Having a starting point of being young/healthy/fit makes a major difference in rehab time.

All the luck to you.

I had a laproscopic surgury when I was 26 for a groin area Hernia. Who knows what caused it (maybe lugging around laptops in the airport). Hurt like hell for the next week but then quickly recovered. I did not do much sports back then but did golf. Follow the Dr's instructions so you don't ruin the repair.

Get yourself some stool softener and ask your Dr about that. The pain killers he gave me stopped me up for 5 days! I think I got as close to child birth that a man could get after that 5 day period :o

Good Luck.

That's how I got the hernia to begin with, lol.

Stubborn turd + newly developed stomach muscles = hernia.

What causes hernias?

Hernia Causes

Although one type of abdominal hernia can be present at birth (umbilical hernia), the others happen later in life. Some involve pathways formed during fetal development, existing openings in the abdominal cavity, or areas of abdominal wall weakness.

* Any condition that increases the pressure of the abdominal cavity may contribute to the formation or worsening of a hernia.

o Obesity

o Heavy lifting

o Coughing

o Straining during a bowel movement or urination

o Chronic lung disease

o Fluid in the abdominal cavity

* A family history of hernias can make you more likely to develop a hernia.

Today's the day.

I just wanted to wish you a good and speedy recovery.

I had a double inguinal hernia, in 2002 if I recall, and I was surprised at how fast I recovered.

I had one side done and then six months later had to other side done.

The first day back from the hospital was the only day I experienced discomfort.

I like to toss and turn in bed but on that day I didn't.

I'm still paranoid, and from time to time I go see my surgeon to make sure everything is fine.

I know how frustrating it can be. It'll be a memory before you know it.

Good luck!

Let me guess, you were sitting on the can and heard the Simpsons music come on in the other room, so you knew you only had five seconds tops?

(Thank you Dave Attell)

LOL^^^

So the surgery went well. No complications. I was in alot of pain yesterday but so far this morning it feels much better. The pain killers make me nauseas when I stand up but other than that, not too bad.

Thanks for the tip on the stool softener. A couple times I forgot to take them and felt like I was giving birth to a flaming sea urchin.

I've got one the size of RI right now and I haven't had a chance to get in to fix it. I don't know how I did it, cause I just lay around all day. I'd like to imagine it was sometime when I was doubled up LOL and spewing beer out my nose.

I'm ancient and I don't have insurance right now, but I go to China a lot and a bunch of buds have told me to do it there. Before that I'm gonna try laying on my back with a piramid on it. I normally heal real fast, but it sure hasn't gone away by itlesf.

My dad had one, so like one of you guys said, I can blame him for that too. He was a good artist and I got that, but I wish he'd been a killer natural hockey player, too.

One more thing. If you can do without, don't take the meds for all the above reasons. Unless it's morphine, they aren't a ton better than acetaminophen or ibuprofin.

I'll second that. I did the pain killers for a day or two then switched to advil.

You will probably feel ready to go a week or two before you are fully healed and the muscles are strong again, but be smart and stay the course. That's what my doctor told me. Hernias are so common to hockey because, moreso than any other sport your upper body and lower body are often performing completely seperate tasks and twisting in seperate directions. mine happened when my legs were turning left, my torso was fully turned right and I got checked right when the amountof upper/lower body torque was highest. rrrrrripp.
