Lidstrom New Captain

Recommended Posts

I think Lidstrom was always going to be the captain. I even believe that it was one of the reasons Shanahan left for the Rangers.

Lidstrom is the perfect "middle man" to be captain until he retires, and then they give it to someone younger who can (hopefully) have a long tenure like Stevie Y

I'll congratulate him when I see him next. Saw him on Monday for the first time in a couple of months.

He's a quiet guy, so I'm wondering if he's gonna go through Leetch Syndrome. The symptoms are there...offensive defensemen, long-time alternate captain, replacing a legend...resulted in one of Leetch's worst seasons. He never fully recovered until Messier got it back.

I think the NY media jumped all over Leetch as well. Not that Detriot isn't a hockey town (it is kind of a slogan after all), but the media is inherently different.

The media jumped on Leetchie when he wasn't producing. It was just not in his nature to be a captain. Think about it...he captained USA in 96 and never again. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but he just wasn't captain material.

The Detroit media is intense as there is a lot of hockey coverage. Might not be as cutthroat as NY though.

I think it's going to be a long season for Lidstrom not only because of JR's theory but because when they start to suck this year (which they will), blame will fall on his shoulders unfairly.

The only reason I'd ever advocate Datsyuk getting the C over Lidstrom is because they're facing a rebuilding process and you may as well have a younger guy have the C thru that time to test his mettle, like Yzerman in the late 80s.

This goes against the youth movement, but why not Draper? Sure he may talk funny but at least he seems vocal.

^That brings me to this question; I've only ever really seen Lidstrom talk when he's holding a very nice looking Norris trophy...how does he do in interviews. He seems like a quiet guy, which might not go over well in the media.

If McCarty was still a Wing I think he would have been a good choice. Why not Chelios? He was a captain for how many years back in Chicago, and a seemingly good one at that. Lidstrom was the obvious choice and I don't doubt that he deserves this, I just think that you guys bring up a lot of really good points.

Lidstrom is a very soft spoken guy, who speaks surprisingly good English. And I don't buy for a minute that Shanny left because he wasn't going to be captain. Making Datsyuk captain would be like making Lidstrom captain minus the ability to speak English.

As much as I don't like Chelios, he seems like a guy who'd shrug off any talks of captaincy because he'd think Lidstrom deserves it.

I'll ask Zetterberg and Datsyuk when I see them for our Bowling Thursdays.

I can't wait for next week tho, Zetterber, Datsyuk, President Clinton, His Holyness The Dolley Lama, and I are going to enter the Texas Hold'em Tourny at The Trolley Stop Bar near my house. w00t w00t!

Stevie Y was very quiet, soft spoken and humble. Part of being a good captain is knowing when to speak up and leading by example.

Everytime Yzerman stepped on the ice he would give everything he had, kept his penalties to a minimum, controlled the team tempo (on & off the bench) and rarely made a stupid move. He changed his style of play because he was asked to, in other words he always put the team first. Off the ice Yzerman never embarrassed himself or the team, gave good interviews, did charitable work and made the fans feel important. Most important is that he had the respect of the players, fans and the front office.

I think Lidstrom is very similar. I think he has the maturity to know how to handle it and has the respect from everyone. I would thinkit is a safe guess to say on the trips that Yzerman did not make Lidstrom was the unofficial leader.

If the Wings have a bad year I don't think Lidstrom will take the blame. Most of it will go to Ken Holland because of his goal tending decissions.

Lidstrom will have the C until he retires or gives it up the responsibility. Zetteburg will have one of the A's until Lidstrom retires. If he is still with the Wings then he will end up with the C.

Crap, Zetterburg just canceled on me.

Thank God, me and Matt Laurer are still on for our Tennis match scheduled for Friday on the Moon.
