I looked back at topic titles from the last few pages and didnt see a topic specifically about this as with some of the other 'who got the captaincy' topics, so here is this article, from pittsburghpenguins.com

THERRIEN SAYS PENGUINS WILL NOT AWARD CAPTAINCY THIS SEASON

MONCTON, New Brunswick – Don’t expect to see a “C†on any Pittsburgh Penguins sweater this season.

Well, at least for now.

Penguins coach Michel Therrien revealed the team will not choose a captain this year, following Monday’s practice at the Moncton Coliseum.

“As an organization, we decided this year not to have a captain. We won’t have one captain,†he said. “The biggest reason why is for all of the respect for Mario Lemieux and what he did for this franchise and for this hockey team. We are going to do what we did last year when Mario retired [and just have alternate captains]. This is our plan.â€

The Penguins have yet to choose their alternate captains. Sidney Crosby, Sergei Gonchar, Mark Recchi, Josef Melichar and John LeClair are the returning players on the roster who wore an “A†at some point last season.

Could a captain emerge from the group eventually this season?

“We’ll see,†Therrien said.

Therrien announced that Marc-Andre Fleury will get the start in goal Tuesday night against Ottawa in Halifax, while Jocelyn Thibault gets the nod in net Wednesday night against Philadelphia in Moncton.

Also, Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin is not expected to play Tuesday against Ottawa, but will be in the lineup Wednesday.

Interesting. Personally, I dont think its about the Mario thing as much as its about time to see if Sid the Kid will turn into Sid the mature adult and earn some respect around the league for his play and leadership, as opposed to his crying and wining.

'Yes I saw that,'' Crosby said of Ovechkin's decision. ''I think in one of his quotes he said it was because of the language, which is fair. But it's up to each individual guy. I think that shows a lot for them to offer that, I'm sure they have a lot of confidence in him.

Translation: "I speak English just fine, give it to me."

in other news, the penguins still suck.....

honestly though, if you seriously consider making a kid who has been in the NHL for exactly 1 season your teams captin, then you are an idiot. No doubt hes a great player, but there is no way he even deserves an A yet. And what, your not going to designate a captin because of mario? Im sure his leadership does wonders for the team, shouting down encouraging words from his owners box. The coach should grow some stones and name the next captin.

I agree about Crosby. The captain should be Recchi. Assistants should be LeClair and Orpik.
