rocker question

Recommended Posts

I am relativley new to big rocker sticks ( I have used messier FOREVER). Anywho, I just started using the sakic and like it, but how much of the stick should be on the ice when im stickhandling? I like like 2" on the ice when im stickhandling (knees bent etc). Is this right or should it be even less?

I don't thinnk it's as much an issue of how much of the blade is on the ice as it's an issue of what part of the stick is on the ice. Especially with a mid like the sakic, you generally want the middle of the blade in contact with the ice (unless you're doing a toedrag, etc.) This way, if you wnt to pass the puck or release a shot, it will be more likely to be accurate. If you find yourself missing passes that you would normally get (puck sliding under the blade), you might want to look for another flatter rocker. the big rocker will make it easier to stickhandle close in without going to a really short stick.

well you can't really have it parallel with the ice. But you want the middle of your blade on the ice when you are skating so that you have the largest margin of that blade closest to the ice. The only way you're going to get all that blade to touch the ice is to close the blade against the ice.

ohhh, so it shouldnt be pretty parallel with the ice

You should generally have the blade parallel to the ice (if there was no rocker it would be flat on the ice), but you want the contact point to be as close to the middle of the blade as possible like TBLFan says. That way you have the sweet spot on the ice, and it's easiest to use either the toe or the heel effectively. If the blade is balanced on the toe, the hell will be eliminated as a viable option, and vice versa. "You paid for the whole blade, so why not use it?"
