Or what about a favorite number? Mine is 14, so i want to wear 14. What if someone fav number is 96? Are you going to dislike that they wear number 96 because its more of a flashy number?

When it's a number like that, wearing your idol's number is acceptable until you're 9. After that, no dice.

As for the favorite number thing: Sacrifices have to be made. If your favorite number is one that is not favorably looked-upon by much of hockey culture, then you're going to have to wear something different.

I wore 46 for years growing-up. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I decided to move to another, more conventional number, just because I didn't want scouts or upper-level coaches to percieve me as being at all egotistical or "all about me." I realize it sounds rediculous, but it was a concern of mine.

Are you seriouse? Just because someone wheres a number higher than 50 doesnt mean they think they are better or anything. I myself would like to wear i higher number because i've had to choose from 1-30 my whole life. It doesnt matter if you wear number 8 or number 98, if ur good ur good. the scouts will see you either way. I doubt they look at you any different if you wear a higher number (not including 99 and 66 ect..). I also doubt that most of the hockey culture dislikes high numbers. If someone doesnt like a higher number because they think its "flashy" or to "All about me" then IMO, thats just a retarded way to think. And your right, i do think it sounds rediculous to change your number, theres absolutly nothing wrong with the number 46.

However; this is just what i think, and for all i know, most of hte hockey culture (wether its stupid or not) COULD dislike people wearing a high jersey number. I still thinks its crazy though, and personaly wouldnt care what other people thought about what number i wear.

They're popular because in the past and even now a lot of companies just give you 1-whatever number you need. Getting particular numbers used to cost more.
