Squats ->

Recommended Posts

I attended one of the speed skating training sessions to work on my speed, and they had us do squats against the wall, no weights. I can do these at home and have huge benefits from these. Though is it possible that I can get an imbalance in my leg muscles? are there other exercises to balance them?

Thanks

Muzza

Single leg squats are an exceptional exercise for those with leg imbalances.

Hold your "resting" leg behind you. Set the top of your foot on a bench (chair) a couple of feet behind you. Squat down until your upper quad (the working one) is nearly parallel to the floor.

Move slowly through the set.

Hope this helps.

Why would you get an imbalance from squats? They work the quads, hamstrings, glutes, and indirectly just about every other muscle in the body. Skating and doing only skating-specific exercises will create imbalances. Squats won't, and like the previous poster said, unilateral exercises will help correct them.

its possible, if your hips are misalgiined like a lot of hockey players are, then one leg is favoring the other, and would cause and imbalance, happened to me, bitch to cure

Squats get all of your leg muscles working so a muscle imbalance is highly unlikely. Same goes for lunges actually. This could occur if you worked on leg press machines only for exemple and not do leg curls to counter balance. Possibly same with aductors and abductors too. Your best bet is to do squats or hit all the machines if you are using machines for your workout.

If you are only doing 'wall-sits' I don't really see how you will get a muscle imbalance. You can also do 'wall-squats' with an exercise ball between you and the wall.
