Need tips on shooting, skating, etc...

Recommended Posts

I'm coaching a beginner team and I'm just looking for some websites that I can link my team to so that they can work on stuff when I'm not around. I already sent them a link to the usa hockey drills but I'm looking for some more off-ice and on-ice tips for them.

Their biggest problem is shooting, we only have 2 players that can get the puck off the ice and that's about a 50/50 chance it wont get up. I've explained to quite a few of them about the mechanics of shooting but I think it was too much information for them to take in so... yeah. Any help for these guys/girls would be appreciated.

A skating technique my dad taught me was just, push and glide. Also, maybe they arent cupping the puck and following through completely. I useed to have a contest for the youngins when I coached. It was to see who could follow through the highest and still get a good shot off.

I have the same problem with some kids that i coach. Only one of them can get the puck of the ground that is chance, I think a thing for them maybe a tiny bit strength, it is mainly technique. They don't understand that to get a good wrist shot requires a lot of practice

generally the shot is something that just takes time, once they develop the ability to channel stregnth and energy into the shot it is going to be more likely to be accurate and hard.

How old are these players? Shot depends a lot on stregnth, I'm always amazed at some of the men's league players who skate after my junior team. It's the ones that don't skate well at all but have cannons for a shot that are the crazy ones.

I was in that age range when I first started taking lessons/clinics as a beginner several years ago (still in that age group).

With regards to shooting, being stable and balanced on your skates is key. Maybe have guys try shooting a few pucks off ice first (with pucks, not balls) and see which players have problems raising the puck. At least that way you can tell if part of their problem is with their shooting form and not with being stable shooting on ice. If they can raise the puck off the ice but not on the ice, their balance or edging might be the problem. Maybe check if they're standing too up right, too stiff, legs not bent enough, etc. Also, try asking them to practice shooting while both standing still and while gliding/skating: I find I'm less likely to tip over after a shot while moving, and I seem to get more speed off the shot as well.

Hope this helps.

you see the problem is that all of 2 on the team can get the puck off the ice. And we don't get any more ice time to work with them than gametimes. So I need to find some videos, text and maybe some pictures that can help them learn because I simply don't have the time, let alone ice time, to help each one of them.
