willc7786 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 So last night I had a mens league game and the refs were absolutely horrible. I was getting hooked/tripped/slashed/held/everything and practically none of them were called. I'm somewhat used to this in that league because its a mens league team of all my old friends from my old hs team, and I'm pretty far above the level of the league they are in so the refs usually tell me they let it go to "even things out". But thats a complaint for another time.Point being that by the end of the second period I'm getting a little sick of the non-calls, and then something happens that makes me lose it. I got the puck at the top of the left circle, deke around one guy to go into the slot, their leftwinger comes off of our defenseman to play me, I make a move on him and on the defenseman that moved up to me. So I have a guy to my left, right, and in front. As I'm about to shoot through the screen the dman gave me, a stick comes up and get me across the mouth/cheek. I drop to the ice cause I can feel a sting so I know there's blood coming somewhere. I get up and after I get to the bench, I see that no penalty was called. I just start losing it. The ref comes over and says he didn't know which of the guys around me got me, so he didn't give anyone a penalty. So because some #*&$ ref couldn't keep his eyes on more then one player at a time, I'm sitting there with a 2.5" gash across my cheek and none of their guys got anything for it. Medic 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 Why would you drop to the ice? You dont use your face to stand up.
BK 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 Why would you drop to the ice? You dont use your face to stand up. cause I can feel a sting so I know there's blood coming someWhy would you ask a stupid question like that? I always drop to the ice whenever I am injured.. It lets everybody know that I'm out and signals the med staff. Last season I broke a rib and my right thumb and you bet your sweet ass I dropped to the ice.. why? Because it hurt like a @#%@ #%^... I don't use my ribs or my thumb to skate do I?
kosydar 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 Would you rather the ref call a penalty on a player who didn't stick you in the face than nothing at all? Obviously you want the ref to see every single play and make the appropriate calls. That is perfectly understandable. Yet this doesn't always happen. I know I've missed some pretty bad plays while reffing, and its a pretty shitty feeling turning around and seeing somebody hurt. But the last thing you want to do is give a penalty to someone for something they obviously didn't do. Its pretty obvious when a ref tries to guess who hit who, and once that happens you can pretty much kiss control of the game goodbye.I can understand falling down when you get hit in the face (hell it happened to me last night). But falling down when you break your thumb is beyond me.

The ref wasn't calling anything in order to "balance" the game. I have seen it before where you are up a few goals and the other team starts playing a little dirty because of frustation. It DOES happen, but that doesn't make it right that a ref stops calling penalties because he wants more balance in the game. A ref should call all of the penalties that he sees. Its a ref's job to do it.. not to play god of the hockey game.

Then don't play men's leagues where there can be the odd disparity in talent because most men's league refs will give a little leeway to a weaker team, especially is the other team is just buzzing around them. willc7786 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2006 I'm not even complaining that much about the non-calls. Yeah they piss me off, but I'll deal with it because of, like you said, thats just how it goes. I'm just really pissed that there wasn't a call due to the ref "not seeing who did it", even though he saw the stick hit me and cut me open. That would have been a 4minute PP during a tied game.
