Burn Calories After Your Workout

It’s common knowledge that we burn more calories during our workout than when we’re at rest. But did you know that your calorie burning is also elevated for a period of time following your work out?

After your workout, what occurs is known as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption or EPOC. During this time, your body must utilize increased amounts of oxygen to replenish your energy supply, lower body temperature, and return the body to a resting state.

Think of it similarly to your car engine. After it’s run, it takes a while for it to cool down. Essentially the same thing occurs with your body and during this time you’ll burn more calories as your body returns to its resting state.

How can you make the most of your EPOC?

The level of your EPOC and the amount of additional calories you’ll burn as a result are directly related to the intensity of your exercise session. Research has indicated that the higher the intensity of the workout session, the greater the EPOC.

Duh. It is obvious that you will burn more calories when your heart rate is elevated than when not, or when you are breathing hard compared to when you are not. You will also burn more calories when you are taking a crap compared to when sitting quietly on the sofa. But show me where that quote supports your contention that "if you have a good warm-up, raise your heartrate and get your blood going that the number of calories you burn would hardly fluxuate(sp) at all" ? That's what's in dispute here, and that's what your pulling out of your ass. The number of calories you burn sitting on the bench simply cannot be anything close to the number of calories you burn on the ice.

Honestly, though, it's easy to tell that your calorie burning would fluxuate between when you're on the ice to when you're on the bench. Unless you are using more than 1/2 of your energy to just breathe, your output on the ice will far exceed your output on the bench. It's a no brainer question; when will I use more energy: On the bench, sitting down, OR on the ice, skating hard ? There, your difference in energy output (if your heartrate is the same on the bench and on the ice) between the two "phases" of your game will be equal to the difference in energy output between sitting down and skating (read: A LOT).
