You'll love Vancouver. I'm in my third year at UBC, planning to start Med School here next september, and after moving over from Vancouver Island I love this city. There's lots of good hockey, and as stated earlier, although the UBC rinks aren't great there is a lot of pickup hockey going on everyday. Also, the old rinks should be ripped down and gone and replaced with the secondary Olympic hockey venue by the late 2006. Social scene is a lot of fun too, lots of great bars around here. I can't wait for the annual UBC/SFU pub crawl which kicks off at 5 tomorrow night....7500 pub crawlers will be wicked. Tonight though, it's off to the AgSci beer garden, gotta love that mechanical bull. Really should not be doing so much drinking this weekend, have the DAT next Sat, if anyone else is writing that? (backup in case med is no good). Oh, and in case I didn't say it, you'll love vancouver, lol.

UBC is incredible. Wish I went out of province to school...and yeah, Main and Hastings is fun if you wanna get jabbed by stoners wielding needles. Of course I exaggerate, but avoid it if you can, esp by foot. Not sure if it's urban legend, but I heard that Main/Hastings has the highest HIV infection rate outside of Africa... :o Makes you think.

Steve>> How are you liking vancouver?

Everyone else>> It seems like a lot of people on this board are from vancouver. Maybe we can do and MSH ice time..that would be way cool.

RE: UBC>> UBC was rated the HOTTEST campus in Canada....i concur... I have to stay away from the sub cuz i'll get whiplash. It's a wicked campus and the social life is amazing.

Re: Main and Hastings>>

True that Main and Hastings has a very high HIV rate...true that this area has the highest rate of alcohol and drug abuse in vancouver

however...I feel safer walking there than I do at metrotown...Why?...

At metrotown i feel the dirty eyes of wannabe punks glaring at me...they just want to prove something so they go out and do stupid shit. oh yah...i've been jacked once and been with someone who's been jumped and have had friends tell me stories of being jumped there...right at the skytrain station....

the media portrays the DTES people to be monsters but they're not. This is a very tight knit community. everybody is in the loop and knows everyone and they do what they can to survive and support each other. true they aren't great to look at but if you spend the time to get to know the community, you'll realize that there really is nothing to be afraid of down there. How do i know this?

1 - I live in the West side and went to school at britannia. I passed through this area on the way to and from school every day.

2 - My Granparents live at tinseltown and volunteer at Carnagie all the time...

3 - Chinatown is located here and as a kid my parents used to always take me here

4 - As part of my schooling this past year we did some projects focusing on the health issues of this community.

5 - I volunteer at Carnagie and the union gospel mission at times

and

6 - I'm doing a practicum on the front lines there right now

so...

I blame the MEDIA...

Sorry for reviving this old topic, keep forgetting to check up on it!!

I'm absolutely loving Vancouver still. Found a real nice spot in West Point Grey near UBC. The commute to downtown isn't too bad on the transit. There are plenty of hotties and the chicks love the accent! Got a couple of jobs at the moment, one in an Investment bank and another at American Eagle.

The hockey side of things isn't going that well. Been to drop in fairly regularly at UBC and at the Kits rink. Can't find a spot on any house teams, one guy at UBC doesn't think there will be any open till August which just plain sucks. :o I think the only soe point is that I could be playing more hockey in England!! Oh well i'm just gonna step up my efforts and just hit all the drop ins that i can.....

MSH ice time would be pretty fun.

Hey Steve i just saw your post and if you're looking for a rec league in Vancouver tryIce604. This is a fairly new league (3yrs) and the league runs from April-August so I am sure you will probably get your fix of hockey! Even though preseason has started, the comissioner is a pretty cool guy and i'm sure he can put you in a team (there are 37 teams divided into 4 tiers according to skill level).

Oh and all the games are played at 8 rinks.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one.

I'm moving to Vancouver soon (early sept), and am looking for some ice hockey. I would be looking to join an adult league of some sorts. I'm not sure how am I suppose to go about doing this. I will be living by the Joyce skytrain station, so I think maybe a league at 8 rinks is an option. I'm not too sure of that area or any rinks near that location. I've searched the web for some leagues and found the ASHL, tried to register but got confused. If someone could please give me directions on how to sign up for a league that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry to bring up an old topic...

My buddy just turned 19 a few days ago, and we're heading up to Vancouver next week before school starts. Any suggestions on things to do? I figure we'll be up there for two or three nights. Ideally I'd like to go to a hockey game but its too early for them. Anybody know when/where the Canuck's camp is? Also, has anybody been to the River Rock casino in Richmond? Its supposed to be very nice. Thanks for your help guys.

Kits Beach, Wreck beach, Jericho Beach, Stanley Park, North Shore beaches, lighthouse park, grouse grind, whytecliff park, deep cove.

Hit the Watermark from some cocktails and food. Best views in the city, in more than one way.

Canucks will be at Burnaby 8 rinks.

Baden Powell trail is a cool experience, just pick a section.

As for nightlife. Sonar, Skybar, Doulins, the Cellar, catch a band at the commodore if you can...to name few...

go to the sports exchange on burrard. hit Yaletown, Granville Island, Main Street, Commercial Drive, and 4th Ave. That should cover a wide range of things to do.

September is the best month in Vangroovy, Have Fun.

It really depends what your looking for. North Van is still pretty pricy but nothing compared to West Van. The North Shore has NSWC one of the top hockey clubs in Canada but its minor hockey so I'm guessing it doesn't work for you. Burnaby has some good facilites in 8rinks and BWC. South Surrey/White Rock is a bit farther out of the city but it has me and its right by the beach, very close to Langley which has a few roller rinks I'm pretty sure. If you are just looking for an apartment Kitsalano is nice but can be a little pricey as its on the beach aswell.

and about the so called Canucks fans...

I'm a fan although there not my favorite team and I know more about the team then 98% of the fans but maybe thats because I'm a huge hockey fan but as I mentioned most of the fans are extreme bandwagon jumpers and Vancouver should never be confused with a real sports town- example the Lions have about 25,000 new fans since they became a possible winner.
