Civilization IV or other versions

How are they? Do you guys like them? Is it worth buying IV instead of III? Is the game addicting?

I had a couple of the older versions, they usually got boring for me after a while.

I've had Civ I and II, never played the newer ones. They are addictive but the real fun comes in playing someone else, so whatever version you get, make sure it has multi-player built in. The makers of Civilization released two versions of Civ III, the first did not have multi-player in it, you had to do some sort of upgrade later on. Not sure if they did the same money-grubbing thing with anything later. I am pretty sure I've seen Civ III in the bargain bins, so it might be worth trying if you are curious.

I have Civ 1-3. Civ 1 for its time was good, but got outdone by newer gaming tech pretty quick. Civ 2 was great. It was simple, you could download scenarios from the internet, cheat easily. Civ 3 just got too advanced for me. Too much to do and manage. Took the fun out of it after awhile.

One of the best games I've ever played was Colonization, also by Sid Meier. By today's standards it is a dinosaur. It's an MS/DOS based game so for some reason my computers have a hard time running it successfully. It still runs on an old computer I have that is running Win98, but that computer has several other issues going on so I can't really use it. The game comes on 3 floppy discs that you have to run to put it on the computer. Floppies!

I still play Civ II, and it still runs wonderfully on XP (very sad that my Windows 98 computer died, and NHL '95 with it). My roommate completely destroys me at Civ II though, can't quite seem to grasp how he gets so more advanced than me so quickly......but all these years, I was underestimating the Colossus and overvaluing the Great Library.

Tried Civ II, couldn't get into it. Civ IV wouldn't run. But Civ III, oh man, that game was freakin' awesome. At least I thought so. But it's not for everyone. If you don't like turn based games, then forget it. And it does take some time, maybe a learning curve of about an hour, but it's well worth it. At least I think so.

My only recommendation: if you're in college/grad school, don't get it around finals time. Trust me, I know.

My cousin got me Civ III when it came out and I think I was either in my 2nd or 3rd year of college. Knowing that it might eat up too much of my time, I left the game at his house on purpose.

Haha, yeah. I remember my buddy got it way back when we were freshmen, and I didn't think much of it. But he played it a lot, swore by it, so I installed it. During finals week. Then the next year I installed Black & White, again during finals week. Then another year I bought a PS2, around finals.

Lesson learned: I'm an idiot.
