New NHL uniforms unveiled in January

This is just another stupid ploy to "excite" the American market. Honestly, if the game itself doesn't excite them, nothing will. No offense, but the fact that there are MILLIONS of people who'd rather watch MOTHERF#@KIN CARS GO IN #@$@# CIRCLES IN NASCAR than a REAL sport really sickens me.

Please stop being an idiot.

This is about selling merchandise. RBK/Adidas wants something for the money they paid to be the official jersey of the NHL. The teams and the league will also make more money because new designs mean fans will buy the new stuff. Look at all of the bitching about the Buffalo jerseys, yet the new logo gear is selling like hotcakes.

As for NASCAR, ratings are down this year. Evidently there is hope after all.

Someone sent me this link to protest the new jerseys...

Protest the new NHL jerseys

I think it will be a shame in the NHL goes through with this. The jerseys should be left alone if the team like them. Especially the classic orignal 6 jerseys.

those don't work. don't waste your time. remember 'petition to stop ashlee simpson from singing'?

nobody with more than 2 working brain cells takes those things seriously.

I'll take that first comment for what it is: a comment.

Your second point basically agrees with what I said. What I call a "stupid ploy" you call a marketing decision. It has (for now) "excited" the American market temporarily, but to what? Not the game certainly, just the "flashy new jerseys". I looked on the ESPN site for NHL attendance. Average NHL attendance has gone down from the past year. Of COURSE, that's only indicative of the first 20+ games, but it can be extrapolated that attendance won't be as high as last year. I'm not saying making money is a bad thing: I'm saying that the NHL work at getting asses into seats, and I PERSONALLY don't think that this jersey thing will help.

As for your third point about NASCAR, I just put that into my first post for a "shock factor". I KNOW that NASCAR ratings have NO correlation with NHL ratings. Besides, I can't stand watching cars go in circles. I can watch that at my traffic circle down the street.

I'm always up for a debate, but let's try to leave the labels out of this.

I was waiting in line at a Sports Obsession store in town and the Manager took a call from a guy wanting a Sabres jersey. He said HSBC was sold out and had placed an order for 60,000 (I assume that was all logo'd items....hats, tees etc... not just jerseys) And, that no one was getting anymore until that order had been filled. Not bad for an ugly logo.

And NASCAR's appeal is as much the weekend long party as it is the race itself. If all American Cities tailgated hockey the way the Carolina fans did last year...the NHL would be fine in the South.

How bad must your napolean complex be that you elect to surprise the league with jersey and equipment overhauls? Why not try it in the minors before phasing them into the NHL? Are things that boring at head office? Should we pitch in to buy them a puzzle? Whose pants ride up?

It's not about the ugliness of the Jersey though, it's about supporting the team. Sure a share of people will just want the new Sabres jersey because it's cool, but most will have it to keep up with the team. I know that is what frustrates me about this move. I'll buy a new Jersey because they'll have a new symbol, just to keep up and wear to the games.

Heard a rumour that the Leafs may be making a slight change to their logo when the new jerseys come around. Only time will tell!

Like someone else said about those online petitions and how they aren't taken seriously...I know I read lots of posts way back when that said "I love the Sabres but I won't buy that shirt....blah...blah...blah"

Yeah...I will probably end up buying a new Habs jersey if they change it (ie: dramatically). I'm fighting the urge to get a new Bulldogs one right now (I've already got the 3rd jerseys from the last 2 seasons). My biggest internal struggle will be to NOT buy a new Home AND Away. :(

This has nothing to do with excitement, it has to do with money. Trying to equate a business decision with a ploy to increase excitement makes no sense and undermines your argument that it is bad. Also, attendance may be down this year, but paid attendance is up. Teams gave away a lot of tickets or sold tickets at huge discounts just to make sure people were in the buildings last year. Not all teams, but most.

I agree that the league needs to put more people in the seats, however you are wildly mistaken if you think the new jerseys are in any way related to attendance or attempts to increase attendance. Attendance issues are based on economics far more than any other factor. Quite honestly, NHL tickets are too expensive for most fans.

Shock factor is useless if unsupported by facts or a logical argument.

By "excite" the market I don't mean the level of excitement of the game. I mean to increase the movement of money (into the pockets of the owners).

You know what, I think we're talking about the same thing in a different angle. Basically, I just saying that instead of concentrating their efforts on making new jerseys, they should figure out how to increase attendance.

You need to work on saying what you really mean because what you were typing was not the same as what you were thinking. For what it's worth every time the NHL tries to do things that they believe will result in better attendance, people complain. Short of dropping ticket prices in most markets, they shouldn't be making drastic changes at this point.
