2 skates i'm deciding between

Recommended Posts

note, this is to convert to a roller sprung chassis anyway, but i figured this forum was better since its an ice skate.

CM 652 Super Tacks Hockey Skates ('03 Model)

Style: Sr 8 E

Developed for the performance-level player seeking top-end quality and lightweight, performance features that are demanded to compete at higher levels of play. The 652 Super Tacks offer many of the same features found on the Pro Tacks including the Integrated Wedge Support Systemâ„¢ with pro quarter control stitching to help provide an anatomical fit in the ankle/tendon area with lateral support.

Easton Z-Air Hockey Skates ('99 model)

Style: Sr 8 EE

Easton's top of the line Z-Air features Z-Airâ„¢ ankle system with dual density Z-Foamâ„¢, Z-Airâ„¢ tongue system with shock dispersing PE shield, Power Wrapâ„¢ outsole, ZB1 Kevlar reinforced ballistic nylon toe, and ETC anti-microbial non-slip wicking footbed. Patented Parabolic stainless steel runners and ultralight Kevlar Razor Bladzâ„¢ holder offer outstanding performance.

any input? also, i'm half considering just getting both. my current ice skate (i don't play often, but hope to in the future) are a crappy ccm vector 2.0. maybe use the easton as a replacement ice skate or something? seems a shame to waste a pretty holder.

thanks guys.

Z-Airs are a better skate, hands down. They were top of the line for that year, where the 652s were middle of the road. My Friends 652s just felt flimsy.

I agree that that carbon fiber holder looks wicked.

my only concern is the EE vs. the E. not sure how much that matters.

for $79 ea though, maybe i'll just get both & use one as my new ice skate.

i just figured with an old model like from 99 it might be a heavier boot than they're making these days. or even in 2003.

Sick,

I got a pair of the 652P Tacks for the same purpose. There's a link at the bottom of this to an image. I'd imagine it's the same as what you're looking at.

As far as fit goes, I use a '06 Vector 6 for ice and I found the tacks fit narrower in the same length and width numbers. Like DamnLocust said, there's not really anything special in the boot. The liner isn't the funky synthetic leather kind like you'd get now, but it seems to do the job.

For the $70 I was able to pick them up for, I can't complain about them. And I don't know how much of a weight difference there is between the CCM and Easton boots, but add the weight of an inline frame, bearings and wheels, and fifty grams probably won't make that much difference.

I may be mistaken (I probably am), but depending on manufacturer, some companies will mark wide widths as "E" while others will use "EE". In other words, as far as I have seen, there are no skates available at retail in both an E and an EE. Hope this helps.
