Deep chip in blade

Recommended Posts

I've used epoxy on a big chip like this before (not on sticks but other stuff) . It's called Marine-Tex. It can be found in a marine supply store.

It's white, it sandable, and it hardens like steel.

Also you may be able to take it to your local LHS that has SRS repair and ask them to fix it with a bit of their epoxy. Not sure if they'll do this but doesn't hurt to ask.

Just want to add that LChockey24 is right. It looks like it probably won't be a problem, but if it bugs you, my first suggestion might work.

Hey guys,

I got a new RBK 7k 1 and 1/2 weeks ago. Now there is deep chip in the blade.

Is this essentialy a countdown until my blade breaks, or can I fill it in with something?

I'm no pro, and I'm def. no lhs worker or equipment guru.... but that happened to my Bauer Vapor XXX. My biggest concern was letting water inside the big chip. I figured if it got soaked all the time, it would compromise the strength of the blade. (This is just my thoughts, I could be WAY off)... so I just rubbed a little tealight candle over the crack, 'til wax filled up the chip in the blade. I figured it couldn't hurt any..

It's held up still. Not sure if it's due to what I did, or I just lucked out or whatever...

can anyone confirm that keeping excess moisture out of it would help?

Sorry don't mean to steal your thread but I am having a similar problem. The toe on my dolomite blade is really chipped at the edge and is sort of coming apart. Is there anything I can put on it to help fill the cracks?

most of the time if i get a ship like that in my blade i just put tape over it. it shouldnt affect your game that much

Its not affecting my game, its just that before, it looked like a deep little paint chip. Than after stick time today, I take off the tape and tiny brittle pieces of blade fall off, leaving the the chip shown here.

I'm just a little worried because its my first decent stick purchase, with my money no less...hey I don't have a job, and I'm a teenager!

I guess the good thing is that it looks like what could fall off from the chip, has fallen off, leaving a shiny hole in my blade.

Thanks for the responses so far guys!

just use epoxy, should work well enough... its hardens up and should be pretty watertight... I use epoxy on the edge of my replacements blades as a 'sacrificial layer' and it also keeps my wooden blades watertight...

That's a very deep cut. Sorry, had to throw in a "mo" quote. As mentioned, epoxy it and you should be fine.

If you epoxy it, it may void the warranty, and it might still break. I don't know all of the terms of the warranty, but with most warranties, tampering with or altering the product in any way will change your coverage. You may want to contact RBK to find out (1) will they warrantee the stick as is? (I doubt it) and (2) will epoxy void the remainder of the warranty?

good point, i didn't even realize that it was still unde warranty until I reread his post. Good call, way to save him some from voiding his warranty.

you can still warranty it through THC if they'll accept it for a deep chip. The warranty is on the stick itself for 30 days from purchase date, regardless of when the stick was manufactured, or what price you paid. give them a call.

I've got a similar chip like that on my TPS R2 blade. It is in an awkward place where i would never usually tape the blade, probably the result of a battle in the corner boards. I'll have to tape it up. I had it on an old tps rubber and the blade held up, so hopefully it will not crack for you or for me.

If you have the receipt and its less than 30 days call the company (should be on the back of the stick on most sticks)and see if they will warranty it . If they dont warranty it due to the chip id say just break it so that way you can still get a new one. If you try to fix it the blade might hold up for a little while but most likely break sooner than later. If you have another stick to use for the time being id say thats your best option.

are there any other epoxy recommendations than the Marine-tex? The bottom toe of my blade is badly chipped on my low end Synergy. I can see the gaps in all the various layers and I would love to fill that it with an appropriate epoxy.

I guess it depends on just how badly chipped... if it's a low end, you might as well get another. I does depend on the chips...

I ended up using Loctite "marine" 2-part epoxy from Home Depot. The gray looks like ass on the black blade, but it looks solid. It certainly is sealed and it sanded down fairly easily with a metal file.
