Sharpening Cold Steel

Recommended Posts

I know in the past, JR (and others) have recommended NOT to sharpen skates when they have been in a hot vehicle, as the heat may cause the boot to be soft, and be damaged in the process of sharpening.

Is there any risk in sharpening skates that have been in the car in cold weather (0 - -5 degree Celsius)?

I've never head That before... what type of sharpening system you use that will ruin the Boot?

I don't recall the specifics of his comments, or even if that is exactly the way it was put. I know WEARING hot skates is not a good idea...maybe it wasn't a concern to have them sharpened in that state. I honestly can't remember now that I think about it.

...But right now, I'm more interested in the Cold weather question. I'll worry about Hot weather sharpening in 6 Months.

I can see skating in hot skates for sure...but I don't think that skaing it Cold skates would have any mal-effects, other than being Cold on your feet. I have sharpened cold skates, and skates that have come right off the ice of what is the coldest rink in the area, and I don't see any signs of difference than if they were right off the store room shelf. I'm no metalurgic genius, so I'm not sure if heating up the steal from cold to hot real fast as a sharpener can has any effect on the steel.

That is the part that I wonder about.

No...don't put words in my mouth...I recommended NOT to leave your boots in the car because they soften up, but nothing to do with sharpening.

As far as the cold steel, I definitely recommend against it.

Sorry...didn't intend to misrepresent what you had said. Thank you though...for the response.

LOL I think I said that you can tell they have been in the car when you can squeeze them together and feel the holders give when you're about to sharpen them.

I think that was the gist of it. Either way (Hot or Cold) Your warnings have been dually noted.
