Pats 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 I don't get how some of these guys got drafted. I think I saw a few tier II kids drafted, and some more High school kids drafted. I don't understand how they can get a real rating on the players when they aren't challenging themselves. I'm sure theres more to it than just a normal High school or Tier II league, but I mean two kids went in the first round I think that played on the same Tier II line. No doubt it's harder to rate the players playing in tier 2, but remember it's not necessarily about challenging themselves when they don't want to play major junior as they were obviously hoping for scholarships and I think that both those players from Salmon Arm will be off on scholly's next year. Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 Ya, but I know some guys who have played in either and the levels are night and day apart. Even from the best Tier II team. I don't disagree that they are good players, just that I wouldn't have them as first round material playing Tier II and facing kids I grew up with and played against. Both of those guys are on Scholarships next year, I forgot which ones though. It's just a little odd to me, just shows how it's kind've evolving and how screwed up the Scholarship rules are when CHL is considered "Pro"
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 CHL players get paid, therefore they are pros. I know the one kid is going to Minnesota or North Dakota, I forget which one.
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 I think the kids that went to Jersey is North Dakota. Players will get payed more playing at a lower level because they will excel and be the star.
Pats 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 CHL players get paid, therefore they are pros. I know the one kid is going to Minnesota or North Dakota, I forget which one. Truth be known lots of Tier 2 players who do get scholarships are quite often paid under the table too.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 What are you guys talking about when you're referring to teir 2? I play teir 2 midget and theres no way in hell anyone I play with or against even has a shot at getting drafted.

kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 Ah, I see. Tier II= Jr. A. I was thinking to myself how crazy that would be because tier II is below tier I/AAA, Jr. B, Jr. A, and Major Juniors.
D3nZ 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 CHL players get paid, therefore they are pros. I know the one kid is going to Minnesota or North Dakota, I forget which one. Not all players that get payed are pros, the players in the Roger Lizotte League here where I live get payed but it;s just a senior league, they got payed between 25$ and 50$ a game. They just passed a rule yesterday though that all players can't get payed by the team (cause alot of the better players that had a regular job weren't playing but because they got a good deal from the team, they would come back and the team would cut the young prospects). The team will probably pay the players some hockey stuff like sticks, gloves (they already have team helmets).
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 If you get paid to play, you are a professional. That's what the word means. The fact it isn't their primary job is irrelevant. From dicionary.com"Performed by persons receiving pay"
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 28, 2004 I just don't like the fact I make more at my job where most players are unable to have jobs throughout the season, plus they end up making less money than someone playing at a lower level who has the chance to go on and get a scholarship. Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 It's a choice they make.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 If you're talking about major junior, I think that the team has to pay for college for their players if I'm not mistaken. There was an article in THN a while back about making the decision about playing major junior vs college. Some teams actually fund raise to help pay for their players future education. THey may get paid a few bucks a game but, to go against Chad's theory, they aren't profesionals. Hell, I can make that team in a couple years. Oh and Denz my Cats are gonna take it this year. They don't even get their own helmets or gloves! Sorry for goin' off topic!
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 A buddy of mine plays in a semi-pro league, they get $25-$50 a game. I know a lot of people who could make those teams but they are still "pro" leagues. It doesn't mean they are NHL quality, just that they get paid. That's why colleges have their current restrictions on allowing junior players.
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 How much do CHLers get?
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Varies from player to player. I think $50 a month is the max. WHL gives something like a year of school for a year in the W. OHL I think they pay while you play (often teams will continue to pay), but I also know of Junior teams that also have this deal worked out with some of their better players. It just seems like a OHL players (just because it's regional) seem to be getting the shaft a bit. I don't see the league sticking around alot longer if the rules aren't altered. Some of the better players are already opting for the NCAA route.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 How much do CHLers get? Like the three other major junior leagues, players in the Q range in age from 16 to 20 years old, live with billet families in town and are paid a stipend that averages around $60 a week to cover expenses.http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?id=1731693
kosydar 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 $60 a week isn't that much at all. However, I'm sure that in some instances cough crosby cough there are under the table dealings.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Crosby has an endorsement deal as well, can't have that in college either. Remember that they spend a lot of their time practicing or playing, all the gear is free and they have a billet family to take care of almost all of their needs. Plus some parents still send them a couple of bucks as well.
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 The same can be said for Tier II players. Play a few cities over for a better team, have a billot, rents send you a little cash, and you get a little from the team.
Chadd 916 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 Really? I was under the impression that tier 2 was unpaid, must have a bad source on that one.
Eazy_b97 1 Report post Posted June 29, 2004 I've been told they are paid, whether its under the table or not they still seem to get it. Not all of the players are paid, but usually the ones who are going on to get scholarships have motivation for staying with their current teams.
