Is this a Bad mount job on my graf 705?!

Recommended Posts

I got my grafs about a month ago, and I've never been able to make the tight turns or I guess just skate on them as well as I feel I should be by now. Prior to these skates I had CCM pro tacks and I figured maybe it was just me having to get used to the forward pitch of the cobra 3000 holder (which I still don't like and have not gotten used to). Anyhow, I was examining the holder earlier today and noticed a few things.

you can see in this picture that the holders are not mounted exactly the same on each boot.

here are close-ups of the left and right, you can see on the right one up near the top that it looks like another hole was previously drilled, making me think that another holder was once on this skate.

right-front.jpgleft-front.jpg

also, another indicator of a poor mount (at least I think so) is look how close to the front of the boot the holder is positioned front.jpg

...and how far from the heel it is positioned heel.jpg

and is there supposed to be a gap between the bottom of boot and holder like this?? front-side.jpg

ok, so just a little background, I did get these skates on discount online as the shop I ordered from said they are "demo" skates from GRAF, graf sold them to the shop as "demo" meaning they could have been on display, or possibly a skate they used for the reps to show, even possibly used. The boot itself is in great condition, just came with some minor scuffs, so I do believe it was used but no more than for a couple of games (I've used them in about 6 adult league games and have caused a lot more scuffs than they came with). however, the holders were perfectly clean and the steel never sharpened. So my assumption is that when they were used, they had a different holder on and then, before I got them, the original Cobra holder was put back on.. and in my opinion a crappy mount job was done. So, I don't like this cobra holder anyways, I want to have it taken off and put on something new (because I do love the fit of this boot)..

..so on to the second part of this post, should I go with the Lightspeed, LS2, custom+, OR the e-pro holder? the reason I need opinions is that I've never skated on the LS/LS2/custom+, I'm only familiar with the prolite-3 thats on my pro Tacks; however I've seen most ppl w/ the 705s have either custom+ or LS mounted so I'm guessing thats a popular combo. I apologize for the lengthy post and appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Pull the footbeds out & see if there's holes drilled in the soles.

My son has the Graf G5's and there is that gap that you have on your skates. He doesn't have any issues with it, but I have wondered if it was a case of shoddy workmanship or not.He once had a pair of Vector pro's and had trouble with his turns. In investigating the cause,it turned out that the holder was improperly mounted. We had it re-mounted and the problem was solved.Apparently, this happens fairly frequently, but there are knowledgeble people here who can confirm that (or not!)

I'm almost in the exact same boat as you. I just got in a pair of demo Graf 705s, while previously only using CCM 652 Tacks with the Pro-Lite holders. I'm going to give it a little time before I make the switch to Custom+ or LS2s holders, but at this point I probably will once I can find a set at the right price. My Cobra holders appear to be mounted correctly and there aren't any other holes drilled into the sole. I have the same gap as your skates, which is normal for the Graf 705s I've seen.

That mount job doesnt look too bad. As stated the rear could have been pushed back a lil bit but i doubt it'll cause you that much discomfort. As far as the hole up front, more then likely when these skates were new they had graf holders on them originally or possibly they didnt, either way a hole that big is usually from previous graf mounting hardware that has been removed. The waveyness of the hold is just from the holder fitting to the contour of the boot. As long as you can look down the blade and see a straight line then there shouldnt be a problem. Your last resolution could be to get a custom radius as well if you feel like your too far forward to get you back to where you feel comfortable and balanced. Give it some time and you might adjust.

i don't think the mount job is too bad.. Almost every pair of skates has a minor mismount on one or both skates..

Try to loosen up the skrews (all), after that, tighten them cross-wise (as if you were changing tires on a car with 4 bolts)

All graf's with RMS mount system (the skrews) has that gap between the boot and the holder. My old pair of Graf 603's with Tuuk holders has that gap too and they are from 1997..

thanks guys.. I've also noticed that the steel doesn't hold its edge very long.. which is contrary to what I've read on this board (that graf steel holds its edge awhile). I just had the blades sharpened 2 games ago and the edge is already gone, the previous sharpening lasted me 3 games.. perhaps I just had a couple bad sharpenings, because my first sharpening lasted me a good 5 sessions.. anywho, I will continue to give this runner a chance and try to allow myself to get used to it. thanks again..
