HDMI/DVI & a Sharp TV

Recommended Posts

I jut picked up my HD Cable box, and asked for the DVI to HDMI cable, because my TV has HDMI...

When I hooked everything up...and turned everything on, I have no video or picture on the HDMI Input (#4).

When I switch everything to my RCA's (which were my DVD - Input #2)...everything works. I called Tech Support, and he said there was a guy last week with the same issue. He had a Sharp TV...that guy ended up just switching to Component Video.

Has anyone else had issues with a DVI to HDMI setup with a Sharp

do you have to set the resolution on your cable box? what is it set at?

1080i & 16:9. The guy told me that I shouldn't have to change any settings on the box itself.

I am going to enjoy the ASG...then I'll start dicking with it again.

What model and year tv? I thought the older ones had an HDMI version issue with DVI

Just bought it in November...so I assume if it isn't this year model...it's last years. The Manual has LC-26SH20U & LC-32SH20U on the cover.

Before I look that up, what kind of cable box and what is your cable provider?

MoutainCable in Hamilton and a Pace 755-HD Box. The next unit up (the one with a PVR) has a true HDMI output.

Thanks for the help.

This is what I was going to suggest. Do you already have a DVR or just don't want it?

They had a promo were the Standard HD Box is free for a year if you have the POP from your TV...

I'll probably just go in a switch the cables for Comp. if I'm outta luck with this box. Even RCA looks great...so Comp will look even better, and once I do upgrade the box (maybe at the end of the promo) It'll be even better.

Have you tried switching it to 720p?

There is a menu with 4 different resolutions and all are checked YES...I assume that means that if any of those are detected , it will decode it (or whatever the term would be).

Like I said...once the game ends, I may try to re-set the HDMI...but I have a feeling that it is a compatibility issue that I will not be able to work around.

I skimmed some articles and it looks like it is an issue. Even if you can find a DVI to HDMI cable that will work, there will likely be an overscan issue.

The cleanest workaround is getting the DVR box or using component cables.

Thanks. BTW...What do you do for a living? You always seem to be in on the Electronics/Computer threads. And, usually have the answers too..

It can always be a bad converter. Do you have more than one HDMI port? If you do there will be two (or more) HDMI options to select. Make sure you check them all.

I did find a setting on the TV I've never used before...there is an option that is not available to select HDMI or DVI under the audio settings. I assume once I plug the HDMI in, that will become selectable...I may try changing that.

Vapor...I only have 1 port.

How can you get a wrong cable (or converter)? You would need a female to male cable vs a male to female cable. Obviously the DVI and HDMI signals are identical (hdmi just also carries audio) what I am saying is that it is not functional.

Yup...that setting fixed it.

It isn't available until you have an HDMI plugged in. IT defaults to HDMI...as soon as I selected DVI it worked.

Thanks for you help guys...

btw...High Def is AWESOME!

There is more than one kind of DVI connector.

Oh of course, but wouldnt he see that the pins did not match up? Well I guess if you werent looking for it... or didnt know. Even if it was dvi-d or dual (vs single) it still should work.

I believe a DVI-D connector would actually fit in a DVI-I port.

You're guessing that something should work on a TV where you need to change an audio setting to get video to display? That's a little optimistic.
