Shooting Practice @ Home - What do you use?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone...

I'm playing roller hockey and looking to practice shooting and stickhandling at home. What kind of equipment do you use in terms of goals/nets and shooting targets, etc?

Wanted to get an idea of what everything is using. I have a very small driveway and a garage and want to get some practice in.

What equipment do you have at home to practice with?

Robert

I go to a nearby school or mall at like 5:00am and shoot a water filled hockey ball like the Franklin AGS against a brick wall. Every time I shoot I have to chase the ball down and stickhandle it back to shooting position. Works for me, but in your situation you could get one of those small goals and one of those "goalies" that you velcro to the bars. It has the 5 holes for accuracy practice.

I used to hang a large heavy plastic tarp from the overhang above the entire front of my garage and had one of those less expensive full size nets we put in front of the garage. We used to put down a piece of smooth plywood on the asphalt to practice shooting so we did not tear up the sticks. We practiced with ice pucks, so when shooting inline pucks, it seemed much easier. The heavy tarp would absorb the puck energy very well so no damage was done to the front of the garage. Because I had a 2' overhang over the front of the garage, the tarp was always well away from the wood of the garage.

i got one of those regulation 72" nets when hockeygiant had it on sale for $20 & put it in my smooth cement floor basement. its good enough to shoot for corners atleast. other than that, i take a big cardboard box & shoot a swedish stickhandling ball against it. it pops off the box back to me real quick & you can practice getting shots off quickly that way. the base of a very soft couch works well too for this, as long as you always keep it low.

i practice in my garage. it has a smooth floor, so its great to stickhandle on. for a goal i use a regulation size goal, wich i got for like $60 at sports authority on the day after thanksgiving.

the garage is a great place, the only problem is the decent size holes in the wall from pucks. besides that, its a great place to play!!!

Not that this is the cheapest way to go, but I sportcourted my entire garage (30 ft./10 ft.) and put in a regulation net and one of those tarp goalies (which has since ripped).

A cheap way to practice stickhandling on any surface is the ball from smarthockey. I really like its weight. I would suggest getting at least one (my dog thought one was nice, so he chewed it up).

i use a whiffle ball with cut tennis balls in it to make it the same weight as a puck. i have a net in the garage that i shoot at with frisbees hanging on the corners as targets.

how much did the sportcourt cost you?

I bought the sportcourt from a rink that was closing for around $1 a sq. ft. In my case, my garage is next to my house (a carport) so it is long rather than wide. I have heard that the sportcourt can take the weight of a car (from a sportcourt rep.), however I have not tried it yet, as I park my cars in the driveway.

Am I the only one that gets yelled at for stickhandling in the living room?

AMEN. i have to untape my stick first or else i get all sorts of crap stuck to my blade ;)

i, along with sicklife, have a smooth basement floor which is great for stickhandling.. i used to love shooting against the cement wall too. it was like my own tiny roller rink :D

Do you/they still have any?

Sorry, the rink is gone. I got their last bit of tiles. I have a little left over, but not enough for anything more than replacement. I suggest you guys watch for it on ebay or watch for rinks to close (as they have unfortunately been doing).

I am looking for two boards right now to close the end that goes into my backyard.

If you mean the smart hockey balls, I guess you can basically use it anywhere. It has more of an ice feel, but I use it before ice or roller. It definitely makes a difference.
