but holy jesus are these ever painful. i had them too tight and i almost passed out when i stood up

aside from that, theyre very nice LOOKING skates and the vanguard takes a bit of getting used to.

BUT, i was aware of the break in period when i got them and im hoping it'll be worth it.

does anybody have any tips for breaking in skates besides the obvious method of just wearing them and putting up with it? either way im wearing them, i would just like to know any pointers.

******UPDATE********

so after taking a bit of time, hot wet sock, etc, ALOT OF PAIN...

wearing them around the house a lot for two days... ALOT OF PAIN

i had a game on sunday night, and... the skates were effin awesome, a little bit of discomfort, but by the end of the game i could barely tell i had new skates on. no blisters, no bruises, my feet are feelin great!!

goin to play again tonight!

and the performace!!! is great!!. stop, start, turning is all quicker. i felt like my top end was faster, but that couldve been all in my head.. but that still counts for something!

i even scored on an end to end rush!

GREAT SKATES!

will it hurt the skates if i bake them twice?

there should be some information on the box/instructions included that tell you the max number of times that you can get them baked. with my bauers they said that they shouldn't be baked more than 3 times. usually around 3 times is the max that the manufacturer recommends. my buddy that has wicked 1's has baked his twice already with no problems.

3x for baking is safe...Also, you may want to add some foam to the inside of your socks (in the areas of discomfort). This will eliminate the discomfort...

Yes like Justin said add foam. A bunch of guys on my team have a trick. They get sample temperpedic squares and use them in their skates in the painful areas. Worked like a charm

Had my Wicked 1's about 2 weeks now, and I've found after about 4 hours skating time that the pain really starts to slacken off...

I baked them twice when I first bought them, the first game in them was unbelievably bad...but you've just got to stick with them, just like what others have been saying in previous threads. Maybe I have been pretty lucky in that they are fitting to my feet so quickly - but either way I urge anyone not to give up with them, because when these babys heat up and mold to your feet, you will have never had a better skate!!

I have the Wicked 7s and thought I made a mistake in buying them. I baked them once and wore 2 pairs of socks for a month. (Skating 2 times a week.) Now they are great and are the best skates I have owned to date.

I've worn my once and got a blister on the inside of my left foot... it's like how breaking in skates used to be.

We all got pussified somewhere along the way.

Instead of foam, I've been using strips of an Itech neoprene shinguard wrap in my socks for my W1's (about 4mm thick). Works okay, but after 20+ hours of doing so, I still can't do without it.

Has anyone already tried to insert some extra padding in the boot itself, by unstitching the top of the inner layer and slipping foam inside where it hurts ? Justin, would you advise against it ?

That's the least of my concerns. I just want to get rid of the pain. I took a mean puck yesterday, right where my ankle bone sticks out, it hurted so much that I had to quit the game, and it still hurts today. I'm more concerned about my ankles than about a warranty that I'll never use anyway, as the skates are real tanks.

There is actually NO padding in the W1 between the boot shell and my inner ankle bones, hence the idea to add some permanently. I think that I'll give it a try, advices are welcome, especially regarding the kind of foam I should use.

I see what your saying, there is definatly a lack of padding in that area...but, I'm just assuming that my ankle is going to move further back into the boot as the padding forms around my foot. What I mean is, at first there is a lot of padding on the back of your ankle - almost too much, which is causing me pain...but what I'm finding now is that as I'm breaking them in, the padding is being pushed around my ankle and moving the position of my foot further back into the boot.

Pretty sure that this is supposed to be happening, as my pain is getting better game by game and there is now padding all around my ankle - so rather than potentially permenantly damaging the boot, my advice would be to just suck it up for a while longer and see what happens - wearing them round the house a lot worked for me.

Very happy with the skates now, even though they were so bad at the beginning.

Mine are already formed there, my feet won't go back much further (maybe 1-2mm, doesn't change anything). The problem is that my inner ankle bones are placed much forward (much more than most people, say my LHS). If they were 1cm backward, I wouldn't have any problem. The rest of the boot fits absolutely perfectly. I've been playing hard with them for about 25 hours now since the baking.

I may try just to move the inner padding a bit forward, might help.

I too would be wary of cutting open a skate like that too. Try taking them to a hockey shop that does custom work before you do that, or even send an email to mission.

I'll probably bother Justin, he's the Guy Who Knows, after all.

Regarding my LHSs, sadly, I'm about 5 times more skilled than them regarding boot ajustments or repairs.

Apart from that, I must say that I do love the W1's, they provide a control level that I wasn't expecting to get, and a marked improvement in speed and stopping power over my former HiLos.

Maybe put wrist guards over your skates there? It wouldnt void the warranty but it might inhibit forward flex
