Leather vs. Nylon

Recommended Posts

I figured there might be a thread on this, but after searching, it isn't the case. If there is, let me know and feel free to nuke this thread.

What are the differences between leather and nylon straps (for your pads)? I've liked nylon better, but I've never tried leather straps at all, besides the boot straps (do they even make non-leather boot straps?). You can adjust the nylon straps, then cut off the excess material. My leather boot straps have like a foot hanging off. Should/could I cut the extra off on that, too?

Anyways, everybody seems to prefer the leather straps. How do you guys like them, and how do you deal with the extra bit of strap?

Depends, to a certain extent, on how you like to strap (no pun intended) your pads. Leather straps tend to be more secure as there is little, if any, give in them. I think that durability is a toss-up except on the skate, whether your pad uses one or two. Some people aren't comfortable with non-traditional straps so they insist on leather. Once set correctly, nylon straps are faster to get done up.

As far as the extra strap, either cut it off, but that could cause you an issue (albeit minor) when you go to resell, or loop the strap around and thru the buckle again.

PS: except for my outdoor roller pads, all mine use nylon.

nylon is lighter, easier to use and just as durable. It's better but it doesn't feel like leather, it's one of those things you need to try. It's almost a wood over composite stick debate.

i dunno.

a strap is a strap.

other than holding your the pad to your leg, it dont do much else.

maybe one over the other for speed and ease of use, but other than that...

i like the quick nylon clips versus the belt buckle style of leather straps.

more often when the clip gets hit with a puck it breaks. I think Scott Battram mentioned on GSBB that after weighing the two sets of nylon straps vs leather that it saved around 2lbs in total.
