cause4alarm 7 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Does anybody know anything about jump ropes? Like what's the difference b/w leather, PVC, rubber, speed, beaded, etc.?

gman 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Get one of those cheap plactic ones that have the multi colored round peices surrounding the rope itself. A fancy leather one is not necessary nor are weighted handles or tapered ropes. I have them all and usually use the plastic one. The leather ones wear out on rough surfaces and especially when they get wet from your sweat. The plastic ones are cheap, flexible, very durable, and do the job. They are also a little heavier so they work your hands and wrists a bit. You want any extra weight, it needs to be outside your hands, not in your hands. I have one that has weights that can be put in the handles. What a CROCK!! If you are feeling too studly for yourself, wrap some duct tape around the center of the rope. A little will go a long way in adding weight to your rope. Or you can just jump longer...
Maka 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I found one that I have now that works really well with bearings in the handles. Eliminates that nasty binding effect. Unfortunately, there is a downside in that it is hard to adjust. There is a metal crimp on the end inside of the handle that is covered by a plastic cover that is hard to deal with. I ended up just cutting it off and then melting the rope down until it wouldn't fall through the hole anymore. http://www.amazon.com/Valeo-JRS-Speed-Jump...e/dp/B0007IS6ZG

I live in an apartment building and my downstairs neighbors will sic the security guards on me if I make too much ruckus. (This is assuming that my repeated jumping up and down is already ninja-silent, of course.)
gman 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2007 I had not considered the noise factor. I think the plstic rope will be a bit noisier with a 'clack-clack' rather than a softer leather or cloth sound. However, I think that your jumping itself will be much louder and more of a problem for your neighbor. Any chance of jumping outdoors in a courtyard or sidewalk? If you go outside, you will definitely want a plastic coated rope. I just looked on the internet and they are called "beaded" jump ropes. The ones I use are called "kids" ropes. There are beaded ropes with a fancier handle and bearings if you want that. I really recommend against a "speed" rope. They wear out too easily in my opinion.
