Foot pain associated with new skates

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have never had this problem in the past so I was just wondering if it is considerred to be normal for someone to experience a good amount of foot pain when first skating in a new pair of skates. Is this to be expected until they are broken in?

Could it be because of how they fit? Is it normal for the arch of my fooot to be resting higher along the inside side of my skate than the rest of my foot which is resting on the sole of the skate. I almost feel like my foot is pushing the skate out wider than it is supposed to be. Again, I've never had this problem before and I know my correct size and width.

what proportion of your foot is supposed to be flat along the insole? is the arch of your foot supposed to be resting on the inside side of the skate a little bit? imagine that this is the heel view of a skate

\ /

(_) <--- the flat portion of my foot is resting on the flat portion,

II the arch of my foot is resting about as high as a centimeter or two up the rounded side. It appears to me that the inside side of the skate is a little more rounded than the outside side, is that because your arch is supposed to go up a little higher than the flat flat bottom insole?

oh, chadd. that statement could have definitely been taken the wrong way. everyone return your skates or rule them out immediately because they don't fit the first time.

If your arch is supposed to "arch," as in upwards, so it is not irregular to have your arch higher than the flat part of your foot. If your arch used to be flat in the skate, you probably have, oh, I dunno, flat feet.

If you are experiencing pain in your arch it likely is a fit issue. Many fit issues can be resolved, and some do work in through breaking the skate in. From your limited description I can't speculate on exactly what it might be or what techniques might resolve them.

Are you flat footed? If the arch isn't supported properly it brings killer agony. In that case, superfeet would likely resolve the problem.

I would go back to your LHS and have them confirm that the skate does fit properly, and see what they recommend to adjust them if necessary.

That's why I always suggest that you wear them for a while before you buy them. Walk around, squat, stride, etc...You need to make sure you get skates that properly fit your foot BEFORE you pay for them.

I am the kind of guy that HAS to order online. My LHSs never have a good selection. All we have around here is Play It Again and big names like Sports Authority.

Plus sites such as Inlinewarehouse have prices that are usually 20-40 dollars cheaper than anywhere else.

How exactly does one "stride" in skates on a hockey shop's rug?

You can easily mimic the body position of a skate stride. Obviously those would be fairly static positions and not as dynamic as an on-ice stride. It's actually quite good for testing the lateral stability of a skate and much more effective than just walking as that has very little similarity to a proper skating stride. However, most people are more concerned with how they look and very few do anything other than stand or maybe walk around for 30 seconds.

I skated around a bit more. The pain is only on my right foot and it is on the outside of my foot oposite the arch.

The left foot feels fine. I guess my right foot is just a little bigger than my left.
