Mission Ion Shaft

Recommended Posts

Noticeably lighter than the AK27, nice feel and good shots, pretty much like the M-2 shaft.

Release is a little slower than my Ballistik 52caliber taper shaft, can see it in practices, and my goalie agrees. He has more trouble reacting to wristshots than normally. Taper shafts actually work, same shot speed as standard though, which I wasn't entirely convinced about before :-)

I.E. if you can buy your curve in a taper blade try that out, otherwise the Ion shaft is a very good choice for a standard shaft.

It seems very durable so far, coating is also very slick.

It's surprisingly light - we're talking about Redlite XN10 territory here. Haven't had a chance to use it with a blade I like though so I can't comment on shooting.

IMO, it's not as light as a RLXN10 (that's my main shaft right now). The flex seemed to be a bit stiffer than listed too, but it performed pretty well. I had a L-2 a couple of years ago and it had tons of kick and I was sort of expecting that. Not quite the case. Again, JMHO.

I've got the RLXN10 at 268g for 48" and the Ion at 286g for 50.875". Not quite as light, but pretty darn close. Balance seems better for the RLXN10 though.

Thanks for the replies, guys... I ordered one today to replace my broken AK27 (which lasted 1.5 hours)... I'll be sure to provide a comparison to the AK27 when I receive it (should be Monday).

Anyone try it out yet? Have any comparisons? I was thinking of picking one up to replace my two broken AK27s...

This is Mission's newest shaft right?

Correct - newest available (as of today) anyways... they have two others listed in the 2007 catalog but I haven't seen them available anywhere yet.

Well it arrived yesterday - and I was on the ice for four hours with it today. I had it fitted with the stock 2" end plug and a Warrior AK27 blade (Draper). For comparison purposes, the blade I used was the same exact one that was in my AK27 shaft before it broke so this truly is a shaft to shaft comparision for me. In short though, the jury is still out on the Ion. With the blade attached, and compared to my AK27, the Ion is lighter. As my AK27 felt the first couple of times I handled a puck with it, the Ion also felt a bit flimsy at first, but seemed to get better the more I used it. I did notice some torsional twisting low on the shaft on harder shots - something which I didn't notice in my AK27 - though as I later noticed, could have been caused by my failing AK27 blade (outermost layer of composite weave starting to wear away at the heel). Slap shots and one timers did seemed to fire a bit harder than my AK27 shaft, but I can't yet say that the Ion was more accurate with a wrister. Again - jury is still out. I've got another game tomorrow night. I'll swap out the blade for something more solid and write back should anything be more clear after tomorrow night's use.
