Tips for best skate fit

Recommended Posts

I know of the general guidelines for finding the correct length for best skate

fit, and the pencil trick across 3rd eyelet to check for correct depth, but is there a general guideline to check for heel size when trying on skates at a LHS?

I searched but couldn't find anything. Thanks as usual!!

Walk in them. You don't want to feel your heel lift, it should feel snug/tight but not cause pain.

As the experts here explained it, with the skates laced up you take a pencil and lay it across the 3rd eyelet from the top. Ideally the pencil should lay flat and touch the eyelets. If they don't the boot is too shallow. Experts please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Chadd, I'm trying to determine which of the many skates I have bought will work best. Poster child for not buying online or without having a good LHS to work with.

I've also found tying them properly and leaning forward while walking around, like almost up on your toes, helps give your heel extra pressure and makes sure its snug enough.
