Changing blade pitch and radius

Recommended Posts

I just recently retired my Tacks to roller and got myself a pair of Vector Pros. The Vector blade from the factory seems to have a bit of a forward pitch and feels like a much smaller radius than my Tacks before. Can someone easily adapt to new pitches and radii in their runners or should I consider bring my old holder into the sharpener's to get him to match?

I would say that is a personal choice. Money spent to match your old skates vs time spent to get used to the new feel. If it is really off you might try and match your old skates. Ideally the skate profile should compliment your style. Maybe give the new skate profile a chance, an experiment if you will.

With the caveat that this is just a message board, could you throw in some advice? Right now, I don't mind the forward lean. I actually kind of like it, but it also feels like I have less steel on the ice which makes me feel unstable.

If you're going to get your new blades radiused, I'd bring the old blades in. It lets the profiler see what radius and pitch you were used to, and also how the heels and toes are shaped. You should be able to get a good match.

Usually, when you get new skates it's the opposite- you have less steel on the ice because the ends of the blade get chewed up over time.

One option would be to swap the steel only (prolite and e pro use the same steel, as long as the holder size is the same) and try the vectors with your old steel, and see how it feels before you take any steel off the new blades.
