i've posted this a few times before, but what i did since i'm not a fan of the lace locks is i took an x-acto knife and cut down the plastic piece of the lock so the lace slides freely through without being clamped down. the plastic is very soft and cuts down easily and you dont have to worry about putting in a new eyelet.

i definitely wouldnt recommend unscrewing it and taking it out unless you are planning on having an eyelet put it, which is certainly doable...

agree with snake, i took the lace lock off of my 9k's for the first time i skated in them and i hated them, because they felt like they were too flimsy. im a decent sized guy so that definatly had something to do with it, but unless your under 150lbs, i wouldnt reccomend taking it off completly becuase the boot becomes very flexiable becasuse the lace lock is in such an important position for forward flex.

not really the lace lock but the eyelet... but I understood what you meant.

I don't really see why people dislike the lace lock, it seems like a good feature. Especially where it's located and even if you don't like the feature; I can't imagine it being there being a problem.

the problem with the lace lock for me is that i lace my skates so tight that with the lace lock, the bottom part of my foot would go numb because there is no give in the laces. without the lock the laces can be tight around my ankle but still give enough that i don't lose feeling. that and the fact that neither my vector pro's or my 8k's fit perfectly probably didn't help...

the thing that maybe isn't clear is that you cant lace up your skates really tight and just leave the locks undone, they'll lock up by themselves with the pressure...
